The whole story of Mickey Steps Out (1931) explained, from the opening scene to the final frame: every key event, every twist and what it all adds up to. Read it as a quick recap before the sequel, to check a scene you missed, or to finally understand what really happened.

At home, Mickey Mouse gets ready for a date with Minnie Mouse, shaving and singing I'm a Ding Dong Daddy from Dumas. He dons a straw hat and carries a cane, then heads out, but his dog bounds onto the scene with boisterous affection. Mickey, not in the mood for his pet's antics, shoos him away and even ties him to his doghouse, hoping for a calmer departure. Yet Pluto persists, dragging the doghouse along and continuing to shower his master with the same relentless fondness. The moment shifts toward the journey as he makes his way toward Minnie’s place, trying to focus on the date despite the dog's exuberance.

Approaching Minnie’s house, Mickey hears her playing the piano. He pokes his head in the window, whistling along with Minnie’s pet canary. Pluto begins chasing a Cat as he enters the house. Minnie plays Sweet Georgia Brown on the piano while Mickey dances, showing off by balancing a broom on his nose and spinning plates.

The song-and-dance is interrupted when Pluto chases the cat into the house, knocking Mickey over. The chase causes chaos in the house, wrecking the piano and knocking over Mickey, who's hit by a falling cuckoo clock. The cat jumps into the stove with Pluto close behind, and the animals' battle sends soot flying everywhere. With all four characters now in blackface, Mickey cries, "Minnie!"; Minnie cries, "Mickey!"; Pluto cries, "Mammy!"; and the cat shouts "Whoopee!"

Q2

How does Pluto keep following Mickey after being tied?

After Mickey ties Pluto to the doghouse, Pluto simply drags the entire doghouse along with him. The rope is tied to the structure itself, not to a fixed point, so Pluto can still move freely while carrying the doghouse behind him. This allows him to continue following Mickey on his way to Minnie's house despite Mickey's attempt to leave him behind.

Foreshadowing: The doghouse dragging visual sets up the ongoing physical comedy that will define the cartoon's second act.
