Maathan is an orphan who lives on the edge, making a living as a small-time thug. He takes part in an undercover deal for his boss, who is preoccupied with his daughter’s schooling. He convinces his crew that their boss is pulling out of the deal due to the risk involved, yet they reach the hotel without any trouble. While Maathan is taking a bath, three police officers disguised as civilians burst into the rooms and shoot the accompanying three gang members. Maathan hides in the tub, and during his escape he accidentally kills an officer. He makes his way to Kochi and moves in with his old boss and longtime friend Shaji.

Maathan hopes to settle abroad with his ex-girlfriend Aparna, Aparna Balamurali Ravi, an aspiring actress who also works as an event host and anchor. Aparna is auditioning for a role, and she is aided by her ex-roommate Sameera, who is now a successful actress. Maathan suggests using the loot to finance their departure, but Aparna refuses to join him, convinced that he stole the money. She travels to Kasaragod for an ad shoot, with Maathan accompanying her.

After Maathan’s boss is taken into custody, he provides details on Maathan and asks the officers to kill him and keep the loot for themselves. The police close in and track Maathan through a lead involving a woman. At a Kochi mall, an officer introduces himself as Maathan’s classmate and asks Aparna about their whereabouts. Aparna denies any connection, and Maathan overhears the exchange. Later, Shaji asks Maathan to leave his home. Seeking one last word with Aparna, Maathan meets her at Sameera’s apartment, but Aparna remains firm, and Maathan resolves to move on.

Aparna is interrogated by the police at a diner and reveals what she knows about Maathan. Maathan is eventually captured, but the officers plan to kill him instead of bringing him to court. He tries to plead, but it is to no avail. He is taken to a forest, where an officer fabricates the claim that Aparna organized the call to trap him. Maathan asserts that her actions were right, driven by love for him, and is shot and killed. The final scene unfolds some time later: Aparna, unaware of Maathan’s death, lands her first acting role and waits for her next film, still holding on to the hope that Maathan will return.
