As the plot tightens, a wealthy friend visiting from abroad becomes a catalyst for Krishnaswamy’s ambition. He travels to Madras with stars in his eyes, convinced that wealth will repair the strains of poverty and provide security for Saraswathi Ammal’s ailing health and his children. What follows is a swift unraveling: the fund collapses, the money vanishes, and Krishnaswamy is wrongfully convicted of the crime he hoped to escape. The world he believed would lift him up suddenly rejects him, and he lands behind bars, where his resolve is tested against harsh realities.

In prison, Krishnaswamy forms an unlikely alliance with Panjapakesan, Poornam Viswanathan, another inmate who is there for the same reason. Panjapakesan offers quiet, pragmatic counsel about endurance and the possibility of release on good behavior, even when the jailer’s cruelty seems endless. He becomes a mentor of sorts, and his presence gives Krishnaswamy a thread of hope in a bleak stretch. Panjapakesan’s daughter, a nurse, provides a fragile link to the outside world, tending to Krishnaswamy’s family during the long stretch of his confinement.

Tragedy strikes when Saraswathi Ammal falls ill and dies as Krishnaswamy sits behind bars. Upon release, he discovers that his children have disappeared, a cruel enigma that compounds the pain of his years spent away. In a bid to piece together what’s happened, Krishnaswamy tracks down Bharani, who has fallen in with a family of street performers and is living a nomadic life on the margins of society. Bharani reveals a bitter truth: Kaveri, his sister, may still be connected to Dhanush, who managed to secure her a job, pulling her deeper into a life far from the family’s hopes.

The search intensifies when Krishnaswamy learns that Kaveri has been sent to Calcutta, where the shadows of the city’s red-light districts loom large. He travels with his father-in-law, and the journey is brutal and disorienting. In Calcutta, Krishnaswamy locates his daughter in Sonagachi, the infamous brothel district, and a fraught rescue ensues. The brothel madam strikes a precarious truce: Krishnaswamy may take Kaveri away, while the prostitutes agree to work extra hours to compensate the pimps for the loss. The scene is raw and painful, underscoring the harsh costs of exploitation.

Upon returning from the rescue, Krishnaswamy hopes to rebuild with Yamuna, a longing that gives him a renewed sense of purpose. Yamuna is portrayed by Sukanya, whose presence underscores the emotional texture of Krishnaswamy’s journey. Yet the shadow of crime still looms: his police ally Muthusamy reveals that Dhanush is merely a pawn in a much larger maze of deceit, and Krishnaswamy overhears his daughter sleep-talking about the clients she was forced to endure. What unfolds next is a reckoning with the ultimate puppet masters. Krishnaswamy discovers that Dhanush’s role is only a fragment of a larger scheme controlled by Venkatachalam, a ruthless operator behind the con’s network. In a brutal confrontation, Krishnaswamy eliminates both Dhanush and Venkatachalam, paying a heavy price himself by losing his left arm in the process. After fourteen years of imprisonment, Krishnaswamy is released to a changed world. He returns to a family rebuilt in the wake of hardship: his daughter has married Muthusamy’s son and is a mother herself, while Bharani is now a grown young man. The family decides to move back to their native village, seeking the quiet dignity of a life earned through suffering, resilience, and hard-won love.
