Vasanth is an artist who becomes obsessed with a story about Mayavanam, a haunted forest. On a friend’s birthday, he shares a chilling tale centered on a figure named Maya Mathews / Apsara as a malevolent spirit. The legend says that if someone whispers the name three times—“Maya! Your daughter is not with me!”—the chill in the air deepens and a dark presence seems to descend. To mock Vasanth, the friend repeats the line three times, and a figure treads into the room. He recoils in fear, but the figure proves to be his wife, stepping out as a playful birthday surprise rather than a real haunting.

The following day, Ram Prasad, Vasanth’s boss at the studio, notices the eerie photos from Maya’s “entry” and warns him that the forest holds a deeper, heavier story. He introduces a gothic thread inspired by a book called Asylum by Kate, which chronicles the lives of the mentally ill who were confined and experimented upon in institutions. The tale pivots to Maya Matthews, a woman who was taken to the asylum after killing her husband and forced to surrender her newborn daughter to the authorities. It is said she died from a fall near the asylum’s grounds, and a rumored ring was believed to be with her body. The place where she is buried—the grounds of Mayavanam—becomes a supposed conduit for vengeance that lingers in the air.

Meanwhile, Madhan, or Madhan in the story, and their auto-rickshaw friend visit Mayavanam to document what is said to be Maya’s final episode. Madhan disappears, and Vasanth’s friend narrowly escapes the place only to meet a grisly fate—another fall from a height—mirroring Maya’s supposed end. This sequence nudges Vasanth deeper into the forest’s mystery and pushes him to investigate the strange happenings surrounding Mayavanam.

Parallel to this, the narrative shifts to Apsara, a single mother trying to hold her life together while working in ad films. She is separated from her husband, Arjun, who is an actor, and lives with her friend Swathi, who works at RK Studios. A looming loan from a local gangster weighs on her, and the pressure mounts as the payback cheques regularly bounce. Swathi’s studio job and the promotional drive for a horror film called Irul become focal points. To survive, Apsara visits the ad company and learns that the producer has entered a contest organized by Swathi’s company: if someone can watch the horror film Irul alone at night without showing fear, they win a substantial prize. Desperate, Apsara heads to the studio, where the events of the film begin to bleed into her reality.

The film’s production cuts back and forth with Vasanth’s expedition into Mayavanam, and with the ad-film producer watching Irul. When the producer collapses at the studio, the director claims it was a heart attack, a moment that heightens the sense that the line between fiction and reality is thinning.

Driven by debt and the hope of a breakthrough, Apsara decides to watch Irul to keep her head above water. Swathi pleads with her not to, and she even calls in favors from the director, who surprisingly supports her. As the story unfolds on screen, the twist lands with a jolt: what we are watching is Vasanth’s side of the tale—the fiction within the fiction of Irul. Apsara finds herself inexplicably pulled into the film’s world, and both she and Vasanth become trapped inside Kate and Ram’s search for Maya’s supposed ring.

Inside the altered reality, Maya’s coffin is found, and a looming figure appears behind Kate and Ram as chaos erupts. Apsara and Vasanth are separated and chased through the grounds until they tumble into a deep ditch. Vasanth helps Apsara out, but the danger closes in. Apsara is shot by Forest Officer, and in a grisly turn, Maya’s spirit appears and kills the shooter. The revelation lands in a shocking harmony: Maya is Apsara’s mother. Apsara awakens in a theater, clutching her mother’s diary and the doll Maya had bought for her baby. In a startling twist, the actor who played Vasanth in Irul is revealed to be Arjun himself, tying the two narratives together in a chilling loop. The film’s former ad-film producer—that died earlier—is revealed to be the one who sent Maya to the asylum and who kept the ring.

In the film’s final act, Apsara reunites with her husband and steps into a film about Maya, directed by the same director who helmed Irul. The production line begins with Maya seated in a wheelchair, and a new encounter unfolds when Arjun discovers Apsara lurking in a corner while everyone assumes the wheelchair-bound figure is her. The finale intensifies as Maya’s spirit confronts the director, and Maya’s ring drops from his pocket before the screen goes black, leaving a sense of unfinished business and a haunting question about the power of stories that cross between life and the screen.
