Set in the tense corridors of the Joseon court, the 15th ruler of the dynasty, King Gwang-hae, is consumed by fear and suspicion to the point that suspicion itself becomes a weapon. To dodge the constant threat of assassination, his trusted Secretary of Defense, Heo Gyun, contrives a daring plan: find a double who can step in whenever danger looms and present a stabilizing, if unsettling, face to the throne. The king’s paranoia makes him brusque and capricious, and he lashes out at those around him, even the kitchen staff, as if every breath could be a trap.

Ha-sun, a lowly acrobat with a roguish charm, is discovered to resemble the king closely enough to pass as the monarch in public. The decision to recruit him is practical at first—Ha-sun will don the king’s appearance for appearances and ceremonies when the real king is indisposed.
