In 1965 Kuala Lumpur, Sha'ari, a teacher who moonlights as a musician, meets his new neighbor Norkiah who rents the room next door. An incident where Norkiah accidentally throws a portrait meant for Sha'ari at the wrong person sparks chaos among the tenants and reveals their volatile relationship. The two begin an uneasy coexistence in the same building as they juggle two lives.

Sha'ari struggles to keep his double life hidden as a Malay language lesson goes awry when a student misinterprets his example about playing ball, causing classroom chaos. The headmaster, Mohd Basar Muhammad, reprimands him for violating school rules and Islamic values by performing at nightclubs on weekdays. Sha'ari vows to stop the weekday performances to avoid further trouble.

On a bus, Sha'ari helps Norkiah recover her stolen purse, a small act that sparks romantic feeling between them. Their bond deepens as they grow closer, despite the differences in their lives. The moment marks the shift from neighbors to potential lovers.

Norkiah keeps the truth about her job from Sha'ari, insisting she teaches at a cooking school, while her nightclub singing continues in the background. The deception seeds tension as Sha'ari assumes a different life for her. The couple's romance develops under the shadow of her secret.

When Norkiah's mother and brother visit their neighborhood, Sha'ari snubs them without realizing that Norkiah's life is entangled with his own. The misunderstanding widens the rift and paves the way for further conflict. The domestic ties begin to strain the couple's relationship.

Norkiah's friends stage a prank implying she is divorcing Sha'ari and seeing a colleague, Rashid. When Sha'ari bursts into her room, he finds her alone with a tape recorder, realizing too late that he misjudged her. He apologizes, and they begin to reconcile.

The story concludes with Sha'ari being promoted to headmaster while the couple raise five pairs of twins, signaling a stable and flourishing family life after the turbulent years. Their shared love and resilience redefine their careers and identity. The future hints at long-term happiness.
