Sabariah Mansoor, Sarimah Ahmad, is a young woman in 1960s Singapore who becomes deeply fascinated by the music of Kassim Selamat, a rising saxophonist whose talent shines on a radio stage. What begins as a chance encounter soon blossoms into a romance, and the two young lovers find themselves swept up in a passion that feels bright and all-consuming.

Kassim Selamat, P. Ramlee, is a gifted musician with a gentle soul, and Sabariah’s question about a future together pushes them toward a bold step. Sabariah’s wealthy, widowed mother, Nyonya Mansoor, Mak Dara, views Kassim’s world of music with skepticism, and she makes a stark ultimatum: Sabariah must marry Dr. Ismadi, an eye doctor, or risk losing the protections and comforts of her family’s wealth and status. The moment Sabariah declares her intention to wed Kassim, Nyonya Mansoor refuses to entertain another possibility, and she orchestrates a hasty wedding for the couple. The ceremony comes with a gift of RM5000, but it also seals their expulsion from their former life, thrusting them into a precarious new beginning.

With little more than hope and each other, Kassim and Sabariah set out for Penang to build a life together. The early days are a delicate balance of joy and hardship: the dream of a shared future clashes with the harsh realities of poverty, and their money quickly runs dry. Kassim longs to turn music into a livelihood, to lift them from destitution through performance. Sabariah, however, believes that renouncing music could mend fences with her mother and restore some measure of security, even if it means sacrificing Kassim’s artistic path. The tension between love and practicality grows as Kassim accepts hard labor, while Sabariah clings to the hope that their love can overcome the obstacles placed before them.

The couple’s fragile harmony fractures when a painful scene unfolds. Kassim returns home to find Sabariah weeping in her mother’s arms, and Nyonya Mansoor reveals that she would like Sabariah to return to Singapore to complete her pregnancy under her care. Believing that Sabariah will eventually come back, Kassim allows her to go, clinging to a quiet confidence that distance will not break what they share. In the months that follow, Sabariah gives birth to a baby boy named Tajudin, while Kassim endures a deeper loneliness and a creeping sense of loss.

A cruel deception follows. Kassim receives a telegram—fake and devastating—from Nyonya Mansoor announcing Sabariah’s death during childbirth. The shock drives him into a deep, crushing depression, and his sorrow becomes so overwhelming that he loses his sight. The reality behind the telegram remains hidden for a time, and Kassim spirals into a void where work, purpose, and light seem to vanish. Sabariah’s supposed death shatters the fragile pieces of his world, and the world of Sabariah and Ismadi grows more distant and complicated.

In truth, Sabariah is alive and waiting for him in Singapore, but the ruse serves its purpose: it helps separate the lovers and keeps Tajudin’s paternity a secret. The truth finally edges its way to light when the couple’s complex arrangement—Sabariah’s life with Ismadi and the ongoing mystery of Tajudin’s father—begins to erode trust. Eventually Sabariah divorces Kassim and marries Dr. Ismadi, and the trio agrees to keep the circumstances of Tajudin’s birth as a private matter, even from Tajudin himself.

Kassim’s heartbreak and relentless crying keep him wandering through a life of struggle. He is evicted from his home and ends up on the street, disoriented and aching with a new, cruel kind of loneliness. It is in this bleak moment that Mami, a kind middle-aged woman, and her daughter Chombi (Chombi is portrayed by Zaiton) give him shelter and a sense of belonging again. They become a buoy in his storm, and their quiet kindness helps him find purpose once more. With their encouragement, Kassim reclaims his true gift: the saxophone. He reinvents himself under the stage name Osman Jailani, and the sound of his music begins to lift him from the gutter and carry him toward the bright lights of a touring career.

Osman Jailani’s rise takes him across Malaya, from Penang to Taiping, Ipoh, Kuala Lumpur, Seremban, Malacca, Muar, Batu Pahat, and Johor Bahru, before he even reaches Singapore. The road is long and filled with crowded venues, loyal fans, and the renewed sense that music can heal some of the wounds left by years of struggle. When he finally returns to the city where it all began, Sabariah and Dr. Ismadi attend his performance, a reminder of how far he has come and how deeply their lives remain linked to his art.

Ismadi, the man Sabariah married, steps into an almost mythical role in the story: he offers Kassim a medical gift that could restore his sight—an act that embodies mercy, forgiveness, and the possibility of reconciliation. The operation is a success, and for a moment, the world seems poised to bring Sabariah, Kassim, and Ismadi back into a shared circle of hope. Yet the truth—a look-alike Sabariah instead of the one who once shared Kassim’s life—casts a new shade over the reunion. Kassim confronts the reality that the woman before him is not the Sabariah he loved, and the dramatic weight of deception finally lands on the heart of their intertwined destinies.

In the wake of the revelation, Kassim’s trust is broken, and he withdraws from the family he believed was his. He confronts Nyonya Mansoor, Ismadi, and Sabariah, seeking forgiveness in a moment of raw hurt and anger. The confrontation pushes him to an edge, and in a stark, heartbreaking moment, he uses a pair of forks to pierce his eyes, a symbolic act of self-blinding that mirrors the losses he has endured. When he finally opens the door again, his eyes are red and bloodied, and Nyonya collapses at the sight of him.

Wandering again, Kassim meets Chombi, who is startled by the sight of the blind man she has found. With a quiet bravery and tenderness, she asks him to return with her to Penang, offering a chance at a fresh start away from the tangled history of Sabariah, Ismadi, and the life they once shared. The film closes on a note of mourning and uncertain hope, as Sabariah watches Kassim depart with Chombi, her heart heavy with tears while Ismadi looks on in contemplative, unresolved calm. The story remains a testament to the complexities of love, fame, loyalty, and the costs of truth lost and found.
