Set in 1965 Kuala Lumpur, the film follows Sha’ari, a devoted teacher who moonlights as a musician, and Norkiah, a young woman who rents the room next to his. Both work at a nightclub, with Norkiah performing alongside her dancer friend, Mariani. The pair often clash, and a single offbeat moment—Norkiah accidentally flinging a portrait meant for Sha’ari at the wrong person—sets off a chain of chaotic misunderstandings that ripple through the tenants’ lives and tests the boundaries of their growing connection.

At school, [Sha’ari] struggles to balance his two lives. In a Malay language class, a student’s playful misinterpretation of a sample sentence about playing ball spirals into classroom pandemonium. The headmaster Mohd Basar Muhammad reprimands him for bending both school rules and Islamic values by moonlighting in nightclubs during weekdays, prompting Sha’ari to vow to stop weekday performances and to keep his music strictly outside school hours.

Their path toward romance takes a pivotal turn when [Sha’ari] helps [Norkiah] recover her stolen purse on a bus, sparking a genuine bond between them. Yet [Norkiah] keeps the full truth about her work hidden, insisting she teaches at a cooking school, while her nightclub singing continues. When her mother and brother visit, [Sha’ari] accidentally snubs them, not realizing that the troublesome neighbor he’s been facing is the same young woman he’s fallen for. A later laundry dispute escalates into a dramatic moment where [Norkiah] drenches him with water, and a confrontation on the stairs leads to a surprising revelation: the woman he loves is indeed his neighbor, and they soon marry.

After marriage, [Sha’ari] asks [Norkiah] to quit her job, but she remains bound by a contract. One night, he is invited to perform at a club and discovers his wife singing under the stage name Norkiah Hanum. Enraged by the deception, he lashes out, rebuilds the wall that once separated their rooms, and insults her, calling her a low-class cabaret singer. [Norkiah]’s friends respond with a prank that hints at a supposed divorce and a romance with a colleague, Rashid. When [Sha’ari] bursts into her room, he finds her alone with a tape recorder, and only then does he realize his mistake. He apologizes, and the couple begins to reconcile.

The story reaches its quiet, hopeful close with [Sha’ari] rising to the position of headmaster and the pair building a life together, raising five pairs of twins. Through its blend of humor, tension, and affection, the film traces how love can grow amid ambiguity, secrecy, and the pull between tradition and modern life, ultimately affirming the possibility of trust and partnership even after missteps.
