Marley & Me

John and Jenny Grogan decide to escape the harsh Michigan winters shortly after getting married. They relocate to sunny South Florida in search of new opportunities and a more pleasant climate.

Upon arriving in South Florida, both John and Jenny land jobs as reporters at rival newspapers. Jenny quickly excels, receiving major assignments at The Palm Beach Post while John is relegated to writing obituaries.

As Jenny expresses her desire for motherhood, John's friend Sebastian suggests adopting a dog. They decide to adopt a yellow Labrador puppy and name him Marley, inspired by the legendary reggae musician.

Marley quickly proves to be a handful, as the once innocent puppy wreaks havoc in their home. His greedy destruction includes ruining pillows, mattresses, and various furniture within a single night.

Faced with Marley's uncontrollable behavior, John and Jenny enroll him in obedience training with Ms. Kornblut. Unfortunately, Marley’s antics lead to his immediate expulsion from the class due to excessive misbehavior.

Inspired by Marley's chaos, John's editor Arnie Klein encourages him to write a column about his life with Marley. Initially struggling to find material, John soon realizes that Marley’s daily antics provide endless amusing content.

While John finds joy in sharing tales of Marley, Jenny faces emotional turmoil after experiencing a heartbreaking miscarriage. During this difficult time, Marley becomes a source of comfort and companionship for her.

The couple finally embarks on their delayed honeymoon trip to Ireland. However, Marley causes chaos at home during their absence, leading to the caretaker's humorous yet harrowing assessment of him as 'evil incarnate.'

After returning home, John and Jenny receive joyful news of Jenny's second pregnancy. Their first son, Patrick, is born and instantly bonds with Marley, who takes on the role of loving canine companion.

With the birth of their second child, Connor, Jenny decides to become a stay-at-home mom. Meanwhile, John continues to write his column, adjusting to support their growing family.

In response to a local crime surge, the Grogans choose to move to a more spacious home in Boca Raton. The new house provides Marley with a pool, where he enjoys splashing around freely.

Following the arrival of their children, Jenny experiences postpartum depression, which begins to affect her relationship with John and Marley. This leads her to contemplate giving Marley away, despite his established place in the family.

As tensions rise, Jenny ultimately recognizes Marley's pivotal role in their family's happiness. Despite past frustrations, she reaffirms her commitment to keep him and cherish their bond.

Years later, John contemplates his career after moving to a reporting role in Pennsylvania. Ultimately, however, he finds greater fulfillment in continuing his column about family and his beloved dog Marley.

As Marley ages, he begins to show signs of declining health, leading to a critical moment for the Grogan family. In a heart-wrenching farewell, John stays by Marley’s side until the end, honoring him with a resting place beneath a cherished tree in their yard.
