The Stray (2017) Plot Summary & Ending Explained

The ending of The Strays reveals that Neve, formerly Cheryl, has been hiding her true identity and past all along. Throughout the film, she uses wigs to cover her natural hair, symbolizing her desire to conceal her roots and fit into the predominantly white society she aspires to be part of. The return of her estranged children, Carl and Dione, marks a turning point. When they come back, Neve tries to pay them off to leave her family’s life behind, implying she hopes bribery will keep them away. However, Carl and Dione's true intention is to reclaim what they believe is rightfully theirs and to assume the privileged lifestyle Neve has built.
