After Jenny Piper and Arthur Fitton’s lively wedding celebration at a local Lancashire pub, the newlyweds spend their first night together at the Fitton family home. The night begins with Arthur’s father, John Mills, and some inebriated guests singing loudly in the living room. Arthur, who is passionate about literature and classical music, finds himself at odds with his father, who is a lifelong gasworks employee and struggles to understand his son’s interests. Tensions run high throughout the evening, and when the couple finally retire to bed, their marital mattress unexpectedly collapses, a prank played by Arthur’s boorish employer, Joe Thompson. While Jenny finds the situation humorous, Arthur, feeling that she is mocking him, becomes unable to fully consummate their marriage, causing a strain between them.

Arthur reassures Jenny that everything will improve once they embark on their honeymoon in Majorca, but their plans are soon dashed when they discover that the travel agent has run off with their money, leading to the cancellation of their trip. Faced with financial constraints, they are forced to live with Arthur’s parents and his grown brother Geoffrey, a situation that heightens Arthur’s discomfort, especially with the thin walls and the lack of privacy. As the weeks go by, their marriage remains unconsummated, and this ongoing issue begins to wear on their relationship. With Arthur working at night and Jenny holding a daytime job, their schedules only further isolate them from each other.

During this difficult period, Jenny develops a close friendship with Geoffrey, who is visibly attracted to her, but she rebuffs his advances, remaining faithful to her marriage. On her part, Jenny seeks help and sees a marriage counsellor, hoping to resolve the issues, but their private session is overheard and spread around by a gossipy charwoman, fueling further embarrassment. After confiding in her parents, Liz and Leslie Piper, about her marriage struggles, they share the news with Arthur’s mother, Lucy. She recounts her own slow start to her marriage, reminiscing about the early days with Ezra, who is John Mills, and her own experiences with a friend named Billy, emphasizing that patience can be a part of marriage.

Ezra, Arthur’s father, is initially defensive when Lucy explains how he once brought his friend Billy on their honeymoon, spending more time with him than with his wife Lucy. Later, Lucy admits she spent an evening with Billy when Ezra worked late, after which Billy disappeared from their lives. Gossiping neighbours pick up on these stories, and the rumors spread, causing embarrassment for everyone involved. Joe Thompson, having caught wind of the gossip, mocks Arthur and boldly offers to “help” by satisfying Jenny himself. Unable to tolerate the scorn, Arthur retaliates with violence, and in frustration, quits his job.

Back at home, Arthur confronts Jenny for sharing their private matters, leading to an argument that finally results in them making love for the first time. The overhearing neighbors spread the news, further complicating their lives. Meanwhile, the couple learns that their honeymoon funds, which were protected by the Association of British Travel Agents, are secure, and they plan to enjoy a delayed trip to Blackpool instead. Uncle Fred offers practical advice, urging the couple to find their own home, which they eventually do with Ezra’s help. Ezra, seeking to mend their relationship, offers to assist with the deposit for a small cottage, hoping to build a stronger connection with Arthur, whom he tears up calling “son.”

After Arthur departs to begin their new life, Ezra reflects quietly on Arthur’s resemblance and mannerisms to Billy, stirring feelings of nostalgia and regret. Lucy comforts him, understanding the complexities of family and marriage, and the story concludes with the prospect of a fresh start for Jenny and Arthur in their own home, carrying the lessons and traditions of their families in the hopes of forging a happier future together.
