During the Vijayanagara Empire, the ‘Rani Vasam’ system sends women to the royal palace as residents, forbidding any contact with men under pain of death. Malleswari (Bhanumathi) is sent by her parents for wealth, though she loves sculptor Nagaraju (N.T. Rama Rao). Caught meeting her, he is sentenced to death, but Emperor Krishnadevaraya pardons him and allows Malleswari to go with him.
