Making Grace

Ann Krsul and Leslie Sullivan are a couple deeply in love and eager to embrace motherhood together. They decide that Ann will carry their baby, while Leslie plans to leave her job to nurture their child at home. Opting for an anonymous sperm bank, they aim to find a match that aligns with Leslie’s vital statistics, hoping that this will help Ann give birth to a child that resembles both of them.

As they navigate this emotionally charged journey, Ann’s tendency to worry emerges; she often analyzes and critiques their performance throughout each phase of the process. Contrasting her anxious nature is Leslie, who serves as a calm and reassuring presence, providing a soothing balance to Ann’s fretfulness. Together, they experience the ups and downs of the menstrual roller coaster, and after a year of anticipation, they celebrate the joyful news that Ann is pregnant.

Initially, both women continue their professional commitments, but free moments are filled with preparations for the upcoming arrival. They enthusiastically engage in activities such as registering for baby shower gifts, attending Lamaze classes, and designing charming baby announcements. However, they also face familial challenges, particularly when it comes to explaining their unique family structure to their nieces and nephews.

As they enter the eighth month, Leslie makes the significant decision to leave her job and fully commit to her role as a future mother. Ann, on the other hand, becomes increasingly consumed by her work, often cradling her growing belly as she hustles from one job site to another, all while worrying about the future.

Finally, Baby Grace arrives right on schedule, coming into the world with a shock of bright red hair—a trait that neither of their families could have predicted. The film, Gund, closely follows the lives of the Krsul-Sullivan household during Grace’s pivotal first year. As Ann and Leslie navigate the triumphs and challenges of parenthood, we accompany them on their journey, witnessing both the universal experiences that all families face and the distinct challenges unique to their lives as a same-sex couple.
