On a childhood trip to the British Museum, young Charlie, Peter Finch falls instantly in love with the Portland Vase, and that early spark foreshadows a lifelong fascination with English pottery that will shape his future as a dealer. As a boy he reads a newspaper clipping about the 1886 theft of art treasures, including a pristine green Portland Vase created by Josiah Wedgwood in 1783, a detail that threads through his ambitions for decades.

Years later, already deeply involved in the trade, Charlie learns of a country mansion up for demolition that reportedly hides a room full of Wedgwood. The mansion is owned by Abe Sparta, Finlay Currie, but Charlie’s ambitions are tempered by cash flow: he and his wife Bella, Rosalie Crutchley, and their two children live in the shadow of such discoveries. Lacking funds, he turns to Sparta to gain access to the contents before the auction. To Charlie’s great disgust, he discovers only French fakes among the items.

Enter Nicky, a pretty redhead who appears at a neighboring cottage. Charlie follows her and buys a worthless porcelain piece from her simply because she needs two pounds. She invites him to inspect the attic inventory, hinting there might be something valuable among the clutter. Nicky is looking after Sir John Nightingale, [Ernest Thesiger], an elderly relative with a wicked reputation, and Charlie tries to mask his surprise when he spots two of the stolen objects—alongside the coveted vase—amid the dusty treasures.

Then, at last, Charlie uncovers the Portland Wedgwood vase, forgotten in the attic. He offers Nicky £10 for it, but she wants £100 in exchange for a fur coat. He reluctantly agrees, yet she refuses to accept a cheque, complicating the deal.

To maximize his chances, Charlie orchestrates a bidders’ field for the auction, summoning Wendl, [Meier Tzelniker], along with Armstrong, [Guy Middleton], and Armstrong’s American clients Mindel, [Mark Baker], and Sweeting, [Vic Wise]. During the sale, Charlie deftly pits the three bidders against each other, turning their rivalries to his advantage and accumulating enough profit to pay Nicky. When she pushes for £150, he goes straight to Sir John Nightingale and, by recounting the vase’s storied past, persuades him to perform the first truly good deed of his life and part with the vase for nothing—the rightful owner having died and left no heir. Even so, Charlie still hands Nicky the promised £100. With the remainder of the day’s profits, he fulfills a long‑standing promise to his wife and buys her a fur coat she had yearned for.
