The defense unfolds around Theodora “T.K.” Katwuller, Barbara Hershey, a sharp and morally complex attorney who agrees to defend Steven Seldes, J. T. Walsh — a man whose career is tangled with illegal activities far beyond what his wife, Ellie Seldes, Mary Beth Hurt realizes. Though Steven is married, he treats his marriage as a mere formality, a detail that will later become central to the unraveling case.

As the investigation deepens, Lt. Beutel, Sam Shepard, leads the police inquiry with a cool, persistent scrutiny. He crosses paths with T.K., who also interviews Cindy’s mother, Mrs. Bodeck, Sheree North, who accuses Steven of far more than she’s admitted to before — exposing a pattern of exploitation within the industry that taints everyone connected to it. A key witness, Bull Dozer, Jay O. Sanders, admits to sharing the screen with Cindy in a film that included a minor, yet he claims ignorance about Steven’s deeper involvement.

T.K.’s investigation brings her into contact with a family she finds both fragile and complex. She meets Ellie, Steven’s wife, who invites T.K. to dinner and bravely introduces her to their young daughter, Janna, Kellie Overbey. The house they share stands as a pristine foil to the moral rot T.K. senses beneath the surface. The dinner ends with T.K. deciding to end the affair and step back from the web of lies binding this family.

In a later, tense visit to Steven’s office, T.K. returns Ellie’s sweater and confronts Steven in a heated moment that ends with T.K. stabbing him in the arm with a letter opener and then fleeing. When she returns to retrieve her car keys, she finds Steven dead in a bathroom stall. Panic drives her to call the police, and Lt. Beutel questions her, his steady presence prying at every inconsistency.

Ellie, Steven’s widow, is arrested in the wake of the murder, and T.K. suspects a frame, not guilt. As the layers peel back, T.K. discovers Steven’s deep ties to Blue Screen Productions and his troubling history of exploiting underage girls, including Cindy.
