Jay tells Kosco that Maggie plans to go to the cops and asks him to scare her instead. Jay then buys a lottery ticket in Maggie's name and discovers there are two Maggie Moores in the system. The exchange foreshadows the plan to hide the truth behind the murders.

Maggie tells her neighbor Rita that she is divorcing Jay. As she gets into her car, Kosco suddenly appears from the back seat and points a gun at her. Later, police respond to a burning car and find a skeleton in the front seat; the presence of accelerant indicates murder, and the vehicle is registered to Maggie Moore.

Sherriff Sanders and Deputy Reddy conclude the crash and car fire are murders, based on accelerant and the burnt vehicle. They learn the car is registered to Maggie Moore, and Rita explains that Maggie fought with Jay. The detectives begin tracing Jay's alibi and Rita's account.

Jay visits Kosco to understand why he killed Maggie instead of scaring her and asks Kosco to kill the other Maggie Moore to make the first murder look like mistaken identity. Kosco agrees to the more extensive plan, expanding the scope of his criminal act. Jay leaves with a dangerous new scheme.

Rita and Sheriff Sanders go on a date, and she reveals Jay missed part of his wife's funeral because he was talking to another man. She recalls that the man drove a truck for Liberty Bell Foods, identified as Tommy. Tommy later tells the cops about Jay's illegal activity, admitting he bought expired food and resold it to restaurant customers illegally.

Kosco murders the second Maggie Moore and grabs her insulin kit with her initials. The investigators learn there were two Maggie Moores, one week apart. The insulin kit's absence becomes a key clue in linking the two murders.

Police confirm two Maggie Moores exist, and the insulin kit is missing. Andy, the second Maggie's husband, says his wife never left home without her kit. The revelation deepens the mystery and pushes the investigation to uncover who is connected to both women.

Greg finds a smashed phone belonging to Jay and mails it to the cops. The police grill Tommy about texts on the device, and Tommy reveals information about Kosco's involvement. The investigators edge closer to Kosco as a key suspect.

Kosco tells investigators he is Don Lindowski, suggesting an intruder lived in his home, which confuses the case. Sanders suspects Kosco because the insulin kit with Maggie's initials was found in his residence. Kosco then shoots at the officers, escapes, and heads to Jay's home to murder Jay.

Kosco enters Rita's car and threatens her, prompting a desperate pursuit. Rita rams head-on into another vehicle to escape; the driver's airbag saves Rita, while Kosco's vehicle crashes and Kosco is killed.

Sanders reunites with Rita at the hospital as she recovers. Andy returns with Cassie to the public eye, and Tommy is jailed and assaulted by other prisoners. The film closes with the sense that the double murder investigation has left lingering questions.
