Jay’s scheme involves hiring Cosco to kill an entirely different woman named Maggie Moore, aiming to make the police believe the first murder was accidental or part of a double murder case. However, Deliberately or not, this complicates the case further, especially because the police’s suspicion initially points toward innocent parties like Andy Moore, the husband of the second Maggie, and others involved. Chief Sanders begins to piece everything together when he learns from Tommy T that Cosco isn’t deaf and that he’s been lying about his identity. This revelation comes after a tense confrontation at Cosco’s hideout, where shots are fired, and Deputy Reddy is killed.

Sanders’s persistence uncovers the truth: Cosco is actually Don Lindowski, an identity he used to hide his crimes. Cosco’s actions lead to a violent climax, during which he kills Jay, believing Jay had betrayed him to the police, and then attempts to eliminate Rita, a neighbor who had been spying on him. In the end, Rita’s quick thinking—reminding Cosco about the expensive airbags in her car—helps her escape when Cosco falls out of her vehicle and presumably dies in the process. With the murderer mostly dead and the case resolved, Chief Sanders finds a sense of closure. The final scenes reveal that Sanders, who has been haunted by his inability to solve previous cases, finally accepts happiness when he begins a relationship with Rita, embracing the possibility of moving forward and leaving his past behind. The ending underscores that in the chaos of misguided plans and secrets, the truth eventually comes to light, bringing some measure of justice and peace.
