He visits Kosco to ask why he killed his wife instead of scaring her, and Kosco replies that it was because she fought him. The conversation lays bare the chilling calculus at the heart of the case: a calculated murder to erase a threat, not merely a prank to frighten. Jay then tries to leverage Kosco again, asking him to kill the other Maggie Moore to make the first murder look like a case of mistaken identity. The second Maggie Moore’s husband, Andy, Christopher Denham, tells the cops that the killer was likely Duane Rich, a coworker who used to bully her. Duane is confronted by the authorities and admits he was an alcoholic who has since recovered, presenting himself as a reformer who hosts an AA meeting at his home. The world of the investigation widens as investigators question whether the two deaths are connected beyond a shared surname.

Sanders and Rita go to a casino and share a room for the night, but Sanders struggles with emotional turmoil and guilt, haunted by memories of his own wife. The pair watches TV news coverage in which a woman named Cassie reveals a recent affair with Andy Moore and claims Maggie Moore’s life insurance is worth $700,000. Andy is interviewed and mentions Duane Rich, a clue that ties back to the motive and potential line of suspects. Jay watches the same coverage and devises a plan to remove Duane Rich, hiring Kosco again to stage a suicide and create an alternate culprit for the two Maggie Moore deaths.

Cassie provides officers with a list of motels she stayed in with Andy, and the police confront Andy with this new information. He admits the affair but denies involvement in any other crimes. Kosco then kills Duane at his residence, and when the police arrive, Duane is found hanging with a suicide note confessing to both Maggie Moore murders. Yet Sanders remains skeptical: if Duane knew Maggie #2, why would he have anything to do with Maggie #1? Forensic clues begin to point to a more complicated chain of events, including Maggie #2’s insulin kit going missing and the possibility that the killer moved through multiple angles to cover their tracks.

Andy confirms that his wife never left home without her insulin kit, a detail that keeps pointing back to the insulin-linked crime. Jay’s assistant Greg discovers a smashed phone belonging to Jay and mails it to the cops, who press Tommy about texts on the device and learn more about Kosco’s involvement. When Sanders and Deputy Reddy confront Kosco, he speaks fluently for the first time and claims he is Don Lindowski, insisting an intruder had lived in his home for several days without his knowledge. This dramatic reveal unsettles the investigators and suggests a deeper deception at work. As they leave, Sanders whispers to Reddy that the insulin kit with Maggie’s initials found in Kosco’s home could be a crucial piece of the puzzle.

Kosco fires at the officers, escapes in a car, and heads toward Jay’s home to finish the job. Rita, hearing the gunshots, tries to flee but Kosco enters her car and threatens her with a weapon. She guesses that his intention is to kill her, and she rams head-on into another vehicle in a desperate bid for freedom. The airbag on the driver’s side saves Rita, but there is no passenger-side airbag, which proves fatal for Kosco in the crash. The aftermath leaves Sanders reeling from the blows of the case while Rita recovers in hospital.

In the final pages, Sanders is reunited with Rita, who is recovering, while Andy is back with Cassie, and Tommy remains detained, enduring abuse at the hands of other prisoners. The film closes on a note that underscores the fragility of truth and the way a web of lies can pull in multiple people, leaving a town to reckon with the consequences of fear, guilt, and the human cost of deception.
