On the film's opening, an aging Amy Wilkinson lies near death in London and resolves to travel to Chennai to return the Thali necklace to Parithi, the man she loved in 1947. Almost sixty years after 1947, Amy's granddaughter Catherine joins the quest, armed with little more than a photo from the past. The two women set off on a transnational search to locate Parithi and the fate of the Thali. The mission expands from London to India as memories resurface.

Through flashbacks, we learn Parithi is a valiant dhobi in Madras who resists British plans to build a golf course at the dhobikhana. His courage makes him a local hero, and his relationship with his people deepens. The colonial opposition frames the looming conflict.

A younger Amy, daughter of the Madras Presidency Governor, arrives in the city and quickly develops an affection for Parithi. Their friendship blossoms into romance, with Parithi affectionately calling her Duraiamma. The cultural exchange and shared ideals pull them together against the backdrop of colonial rule.

Parithi guides Amy through Madras, showcasing its culture and everyday life. The pair are joined by the witty translator Nambi, who injects humor into tense moments. Their bond grows amid the challenges posed by officials.

As India nears freedom, tensions with White officials intensify. On 15 August 1947, India gains independence, and Duraiamma is forced to return to England. Parithi fights to stay connected with her despite the upheaval.

Parithi runs from pillar to post to secure a life with Duraiamma while an Indian police officer urges them to stay out of sight for their safety. The couple's devotion is tested by the authorities' scrutiny. The era's political turmoil frames their personal crisis.

The lovers hide for hours in the Clock Room atop Madras Central Rail Station. A critical timing mix-up causes the clock to show four when it is really five, foiling their plan. The incident underscores how chance and time shape their fates.

The narrative shifts to the present, with Duraiamma still seeking Parithi and revisiting places connected to their past. She retraces steps across Chennai and other locales in a bid to uncover his fate. The quest continues as memories begin to surface.

A taxi driver—who first met her as a stranger at Madras Airport—recognizes the woman from the old photo and plays a crucial role in guiding her toward answers. He unknowingly acts as a bridge between the past and present. The ride leads her to hidden traces of Parithi's life.

The taxi driver escorts Duraiamma to Parithi's tomb, where she learns he had died about twelve years earlier. The revelation closes the loop of his life and separates their paths by time. She faces the end with a mix of loss and acceptance.

In a poignant finale, Duraiamma asserts that the Thali necklace is hers to claim. She dies after declaring 'It's Mine,' fulfilling the necklace's symbol of belonging and memory. The story ends with the necklace returning to Parithi's legacy.
