Placed behind bars during the war, Diego Callahan, also known as Macho, David Janssen travels to Texas in search of the man responsible for his imprisonment.
In Confederate Texas, he crosses paths with one-armed Confederate Army colonel David Mountford, David Carradine, and a tense quarrel over a bottle of champagne ends with Callahan killing the colonel in front of his wife, Alexandra Mountford, Jean Seberg. Vengeance becomes Alexandra’s immediate goal, and she places a $1,000 bounty on Callahan’s head. To help her, she lures Duffy, James Booth, into the hunt.
Travelling with Alexandra through the troubled lands, Duffy tracks Callahan down and challenges him to a high-stakes game of horseshoes for money. When Alexandra seeks Duffy out, she discovers that Callahan has hanged him, a stark and brutal turn that hardens her resolve.
Alexandra then goes to work at a casino run by Harry Wheeler, James Booth, where she writes letters for illiterate cowboys. Wheeler agrees to assemble a team of bounty hunters and presses the pursuit full force. Alexandra spots Callahan at the casino and befriends a young cowboy, Yancy, Bo Hopkins, convincing him that her honor has been insulted. Yancy follows Callahan to a poker game, and a chaotic melee erupts. He escapes during the confusion, but Alexandra presses on, catching up with Callahan and joining him on the road with Callahan’s partner.
Back at Callahan’s cabin, Alexandra makes a fatal attempt on his life, but Callahan overpowers her and savagely beats her, an act that is followed by a brutal rape. The assault leaves visible scars on her face, yet she chooses to stay by his side. A mother bear attack nearly ends her life, but Callahan shoots the adult bear to protect the cub, proving he can show mercy when needed. The encounter deepens Alexandra’s feelings, and she slowly falls in love with the man who killed her husband.
Now in love with Callahan, she travels with him and his partner, knowing Wheeler’s posse remains in pursuit. Callahan faces a grim realization: he cannot erase the threat by killing them all, and the chase—and the moral weight of their bond—continues to unfold.
