Late one evening, Paul Matthews, a despondent biochemist, visits Madame Ruth, a gypsy palm reader. To his dismay, she predicts no romantic prospects in his future, leaving him frustrated and heartbroken.

Madame Ruth offers Paul a vial of 'Love potion number 8,' instructing him to dilute it extensively before use. Although skeptical of its effects as a scientist, he pockets the potion, intrigued by the possibility.

At a bar with his friends, Paul is challenged to flirt with a beautiful woman but faces an embarrassing rejection. This incident further deepens his feelings of inadequacy in the realm of romance.

Meanwhile, Diane Farrow struggles home in her unreliable car, only to receive a ticket from Officer, a police officer. This event adds to her already overwhelming day as she encounters her boyfriend Gary shortly after.

Paul's friends send a hooker named Marisa to cheer him up following his bar incident. As they share a drink, Paul carelessly discards the love potion, unaware of the chaos it will soon create.
