Ho Kam-ang, Stephen Chow, is a gentle, lower‑ranked lunch courier who carries himself with a quiet dignity even as he faces everyday setbacks. He secretly falls for Lily, Christy Chung Lai-Tai, a woman who brightens the local fitness center and represents everything he admires—grit, charm, and a sense of purpose. Yet Lily makes one thing brutally clear: she dislikes men who seem weak or spineless, a message that lands hard on Ho when a date goes wrong and when Black Bear, the fitness center’s formidable judo‑fueled rival, steps in to complicate Ho’s chances with Lily.

Seeking a lifeline after another humiliation, Ho takes refuge at a shabby shop run by Gwai-wong Tat, a comically shambling character who promises kung-fu lessons in exchange for money. In truth, Tat is a con artist who peddles hollow, fantasy kung fu techniques rather than real discipline. Undeterred and increasingly desperate, Ho agrees to learn, hoping that any new skill might finally win Lily’s respect and affection.

When Ho loses his job and money, he tells Tat he’ll stay by his side for life, a decision that only deepens Ho’s vulnerability but also drives him toward a possible transformation. Tat pushes him toward a perilous “training” path, urging Ho to attempt the infamous invincible move known as the Invincible Windfire Spin—a move that supposedly could endanger an opponent by leveraging a wild descent down a stairwell. Ho wavers, but a timely accident, where Tat himself tumbles down the stairs and somehow survives, convinces Ho that the technique might be real enough to trust.

Armed with a new sense of purpose, Ho leaps into action to protect Lily when Black Bear menaces her again in a parking lot. Wearing a Garfield mask like a comic‑book superhero, Ho intervenes and, with the help of the questionable spin, manages to beat Black Bear. The moment is both triumphant and perplexing, because Lily isn’t convinced it was Ho who saved her until the next day when she is introduced to a new contender for her affections.

Dai-si-hing, a boastful karate champion from Japan, arrives and claims to be the one who saved Lily, casting Ho into doubt and spurring him to challenge the interloper. Ho and Tat follow this new rival to the fitness center, where they witness Dai-si-hing effortlessly defeat a Taekwondo master, a Kendo master, a boxer, and even Black Bear. The revelation hits hard: Tat is not merely a swindler—he is a world‑class martial artist who once dominated the sport, his glory truncated by a broken leg in Japan long ago. This truth becomes a turning point for Ho and Tat, who agree that one month of training could rekindle the public’s faith in kung fu and elevate Ho to genuine contender status.

A side bet is struck: if Ho can endure a three‑round match with Dai-si-hing, the public image of kung fu will be revived at the center. In the days that follow, their “training” consists mostly of late nights and meals, a far cry from the grueling discipline Ho imagined. Lily, worried about Ho’s safety, rushes to the stadium to call the whole thing off, only to be trapped in a malfunctioning elevator that delays her arrival.

When the fight begins, Ho is the crowd’s underdog favorite because his calm, fearless demeanor unsettles his opponent. Round one sees Dai-si-hing charging in, only to be met with Ho’s unexpected stillness that confuses him and creates space for doubt. In round two, Tat instructs Ho to wear the opponent down with controlled submissions while cleverly distracting him with playful juggling—an approach that keeps the match unpredictable and entertaining.
