As Watty Watts (Jack Nance) and his fiancée Starlene (Renée Zellweger) plot an audacious convenience store heist, their relationship is thrust into turmoil amid a tangled mix of betrayal and desperation. Their well-laid plans quickly unravel when Creepy Cody and Dinosaur Bob, enforcers for a local mobster, ominously appear at Watty’s door, demanding repayment for an unpaid loan that funded the engagement ring for Starlene.
As pressure mounts, Billy Mack Black, Watty’s ex-cellmate now battling addiction, suggests a seemingly foolproof robbery that promises a fortune for all involved. Despite Starlene’s cautious instincts, Watty is lured into the scheme, and the group sets their heist into action.
Things escalate dramatically when Billy, in a panic, shoots a store clerk who was under the influence. In a frenzied bid to escape, Watty grabs a fork and fights back, breaking free and frantically urging Starlene to flee with him to Mexico to embark on a fresh start.
However, their escape does not go unnoticed. Two relentless police officers, bent on vengeance for the clerk’s murder, come after them. Starlene exhibits her resourcefulness by taking out one of the officers, inadvertently killing the other in the chaos. The couple thrives under the spotlight bestowed upon them by a sensationalist media that romanticizes their plight as outlaw lovers.
While journeying toward Mexico, they make a surprising stop to visit Starlene’s parents, Thaylene and Vergil. This reunion devolves into a violent clash that leaves everyone dead except for Billy, who escapes the scene.
The final confrontation occurs in Mexico where Billy finally pursues Watty and Starlene. In a gripping twist, it is Starlene who becomes the pivotal force, ending Billy’s threat with an overdose of potent drugs.
With their enemies eliminated, Watty and Starlene set off to begin their new life, aided by liquid LSD gifted by Vergil. As they drive into the horizon, their shared love and resolve to start anew shine brightly amidst the surrounding chaos, offering a glimpse of hope.
