Last Shift

Jessica Loren begins her first assignment on the final night before the station closes. Her commanding officer Cohen explains the unique stakes: a HAZMAT team will collect difficult-to-dispose evidence, and she must remain at her post. He also gives her his number in case of emergency.

Cohen gives Loren a quick tour of the shuttered station and reiterates the no-leave rule. He underscores the isolation of their post and the importance of staying vigilant. Loren absorbs the unsettling briefing as the night begins.

Loren grows bored and nearly dozes off until a knock at the door punctures the quiet. She discovers a homeless man in the hallway, who urinates on the floor and refuses to leave. She forcibly escorts him outside, and he staggers away.

The dispatcher relays a series of distress calls from a woman named Monica who claims she’s been abducted by a cult. These calls are routed to the new, vacant station, heightening the sense of danger. Loren senses something sinister brewing beyond the routine night shift.

A rear door is found open and the same homeless man is later located in a storage room, throwing objects. Loren detains him and takes him to a holding cell, where the door inexplicably locks behind her. The lights go out, a bloody face appears in the window, and an unseen figure taunts her as her flashlight slips from her grasp.

Back in the main area, Loren experiences unsettling paranormal activity: chairs and doors move on their own and eerie singing fills the hall. She meets Marigold, a loiterer who reveals the cult’s true history and says the public story hides a mass suicide at the station a year ago. Marigold vanishes, humming the song Loren heard.

Officer Ryan Price arrives to check on Loren. She accuses him of planning the events as hazing, but he asserts he’s simply there to look after her and that he served with her father. He confirms the cult was captured alive, and tells Loren that her father would be proud.

Loren experiences visions confirming Monica was the cult’s final victim and died over a year ago. A living member of the Paymon cult then traps Loren, but dies by suicide in front of her, underscoring the cult’s lingering reach. Loren struggles to make sense of the escalating hauntings.

Her dead father speaks to her again, urging justice for his death. Loren returns to the holding cell only to find the homeless man has hanged himself, a grim echo of the station’s dark past. The supernatural pressure intensifies.

The station is assaulted by cult members and Loren fights back, killing several. The violence escalates as she pushes toward an endgame, the line between victim and killer becoming blurred. The mounting horror culminates in a desperate struggle for survival.

As Loren shoots the last cultist, Cohen shoots her from behind, ending the rampage. A moment of clarity follows, during which she realizes she has slaughtered the entire HAZMAT team. The revelation is grave and tragic, sealing her fate.

Cohen calls for medical help as Loren bleeds out. The spirits of Paymon and his cultists close in around her as she dies, leaving the station to be haunted by their presence. The ending suggests the evil will endure beyond the living, long after the night is over.
