Ladies of Leisure

Marian arrives at Eric Van Norden's residence, determined to marry him. Van Norden does not share her feelings and has even left town for six months hoping she would forget him. She notices his hat on the sofa and, curious, pockets his spare key before leaving, setting the stage for later access.

During the Forrests' lavish party, Marian awaits Van Norden while Jack spends time with Mamie Taylor. Mamie is startled to recognize Eddie Lannigan, a conman and her ex-husband. Jack confesses his feelings and proposes with his signet ring, but Mamie says she can only wear the ring as a token of friendship and then quietly leaves. Eddie follows Mamie and threatens her into helping steal from the Forrests.

Using the spare key, Marian slips into Van Norden's home before he can hide again. She insists they have tea together before Jack can escort her home, and Van Norden reluctantly agrees, allowing a fragile moment of civility between them. The scene foreshadows a thaw in their estrangement.

Jack hires a private investigator to locate Mamie and learn more about her past. It is revealed that Mamie was tricked by Eddie into a fake marriage after her father was framed for a jewel robbery. This knowledge deepens the tension as the couple tries to support Mamie while keeping her past hidden.

After giving most of her money away, Mamie goes to the Brooklyn Bridge to kill herself. Van Norden notices her from his car and stops her, refusing to leave her to her fate. He takes Mamie back to his place, beginning an uneasy but protective bond between them.

Mamie and Van Norden share a quiet dinner, signaling a thaw between them. After seeing them together, the private investigator phones Jack to report what he witnessed.

Jack arrives to confront the situation and finds Van Norden's ring on the dining table, jumping to a worst‑case conclusion. Marian then appears wearing Van Norden's pajamas and explains that she and Eric had married earlier that day, easing the tension.

Jack is relieved and congratulates the couple on their marriage. Marian helps Mamie slip out through the apartment's back door to avoid drawing attention and to ensure Mamie’s safety.

Eddie surprises them with a gun, prompting Jack to strike him in a punch. The fight spirals out of control as Eddie retaliates with gunfire, striking Mamie and wounding her.

Marian and Van Norden are legally married at Van Norden's apartment, bringing the couple to a formal union. Mamie recovers from her injuries and accepts Jack's proposal, while Eddie is imprisoned for his crimes but is allowed to keep his saxophone as a bittersweet consolation.
