Sir Giles Staverley, Christopher Plummer, is a compulsive gambler who is duped into gambling away his home by his old rival, Lord Harry Wrotham, Edward Fox. As the debt spirals, Staverley reaches a desperate agreement: he will stake everything he has left against the hand of his daughter, Serena Staverley, and her trust fund of 80,000 guineas. The plan is steeped in old grudges and family pride, and even his deeply loved nephew, Nicholas, Neil Dickson, pleads for caution. Yet the gamble ends in a crushing defeat, and the house — and Serena — slip from Staverley’s grasp.
Unable to bear the ruin and the sight of his daughter’s distress, Staverley takes his own life, leaving Serena to face a precarious future. In the aftermath, Lord Justin Vulcan, Marcus Gilbert, a famously cool and precise gambler, steps in to challenge Wrotham for the house and the girl. He defeats Wrotham, bringing the property and Serena under his control, but with no clear plan for what to do next. The news reaches Serena through her uncle and cousin, Nicholas, who begs her to marry him to shield her from Vulcan’s hold. Serena, however, remains steadfast and refuses, explaining that the Staverleys have always paid their debts, and that her own life should not be dictated by fear or convenience.
Meanwhile, Isabel Gillingham, Fiona Fullerton, who is secretly in love with Vulcan, grows wary of the mystery surrounding Serena’s absence from society. Vulcan himself appears detached, insisting the victory has slipped his mind as days pass without a visit to the Staverley estate. When Isabel begins to suspect Serena’s influence, she watches with a mix of jealousy and curiosity, unsure whether Serena is a threat to her own social standing.
The plot thickens when Vulcan travels to meet Serena and discovers a younger, more captivating woman than he anticipated. He invites Serena to be a guest at Mandrake, his ancestral seaside home, much to the chagrin of Justin’s mother, Lady Harriet Vulcan, Diana Rigg, who fears the alliance could disrupt the delicate balance of power within the family and the estate. Lady Harriet’s resistance adds another layer of tension as Serena steps into a world of social maneuvering and hidden motives.
At Mandrake, Serena forms an unlikely friendship with Justin. He shares his deep affection for the place and guides her through the landscapes and customs of the house, teaching her about the sea, the history of Mandrake, and the subtle art of reading people who move in the shadowy world of gamblers and smugglers. Yet Serena’s innocence makes her vulnerable to the schemes of those who prey on trust and naivety, pulling her into a web of intrigue that includes danger, deception, and danger-laden encounters with highwaymen and other unscrupulous figures.
As tensions rise and secrets surface, a crisis emerges that tests the growing bond between Serena and Justin. They must navigate conflicting loyalties, power plays, and the weight of family debts as they confront their own feelings for each other. In the end, their relationship stands at a crossroads, forcing them to decide what kind of future they truly want and what they are willing to risk for love, loyalty, and a chance at a new life together.
Old loyalties, new alliances, and the ever-present lure of riskingly high stakes shape a tale where romance and danger intertwine, and where two young souls must decide whether to trust one another enough to face a future shaped by the shadows of the past. Old Vulcan shows up as a forceful presence in the background, reminding everyone that the past has a way of returning to test the promises of the present.
