What Happens in Kuduz: Full Plot Summary

The whole story of Kuduz (1989) explained, from the opening scene to the final frame: every key event, every twist and what it all adds up to. Read it as a quick recap before the sequel, to check a scene you missed, or to finally understand what really happened.

A petty criminal is released from prison and marries his girlfriend, starting a life that is poor but content, free from crime at first. That calm is shattered when his wife commits adultery, which leads him to murder her and her lover. He then escapes into the mountains and evades justice for years.

This is a story about love and tragedy set in the grim social outskirts of the city. Badema, Snežana Bogdanović, a seductive local girl, meets Bećir Kuduz Slobodan Ćustić who has just come out of prison. Kuduz dreams of starting a construction business, while Badema wants to work in a local cafe where it is fun and never boring.

But Badema is not a homebody, and Kuduz is a man haunted by tragedy, torn by love, passion and jealousy. The two quibble and make up, then fight and split up, only to return again and again, and the story unfolds toward its inevitable tragic end. And behind this tragedy lies the pure, true love of Kuduz and Badema's five-year-old daughter Amela Ivana Legin.

Kuduz Plot Explained: Your Questions Answered

The questions people ask most about Kuduz (1989): what happens in the confusing scenes, why the characters do what they do, the twists, hidden details and what the ending means. Each answer contains spoilers.

Q1

Why did Kuduz murder Badema and her lover?

Kuduz murdered Badema and her lover because of intense jealousy and betrayal. After being released from prison and trying to build an honest life, he discovered that his wife was having an affair. The betrayal shattered his already fragile sense of trust and security, pushing him to a violent act in a moment of passion. His history of trauma and his deep, possessive love for Badema made the infidelity especially devastating.

Foreshadowing: Earlier in the film, the couple's relationship is shown to be volatile, with constant fighting, reconciliations, and Kuduz's growing jealousy setting the stage for this tragic climax.

Q2

Why did Kuduz marry Badema after leaving prison?

Kuduz married Badema because he saw her as his chance at a completely new life. After being released from prison, he was determined to leave crime behind and build something legitimate, specifically dreaming of starting a construction business. Badema represented hope for a normal, honest future, and marrying her was his concrete step toward that different life.

Foreshadowing: Their first meeting at the city outskirts immediately hints at the possibility of redemption through their relationship.

Q3

Why was Badema unfaithful despite Kuduz's efforts?

Badema was unfaithful because she craved excitement and freedom, which contrasted sharply with the poor, stable life Kuduz was trying to build. While Kuduz dreamed of legitimate work and domestic stability, Badema wanted to work at a lively local cafe where life was never boring. Her free spirit resisted the harsh domesticity of their poverty-stricken existence, leading her to seek thrills elsewhere.

Foreshadowing: Early in their marriage, their conflicting aspirations are evident, Kuduz wants construction work while Badema dreams of the cafe, showing fundamental incompatibility.

Q4

What happened to Amela after the murder?

After the murder, Amela (Badema's five-year-old daughter from before meeting Kuduz) remained with Kuduz. Despite killing her mother, Kuduz formed a lasting bond with Amela, becoming a father-like figure to her. Years later, they meet again under difficult circumstances, and their relationship embodies the story's theme of enduring love even after tragic loss.

Foreshadowing: Kuduz's protective, sometimes jealous bond with Amela is established early, showing his capacity for genuine love despite his violent nature.

Q5

Why did Kuduz flee to the mountains after the murder?

Kuduz fled to the mountains immediately after murdering Badema and her lover to escape justice. The mountains provided remote, inaccessible terrain where he could hide from the law for years. This setting also reflects his isolation from society and the symbolic descent into a life as a true outlaw, mirroring his pre-prison criminal existence.

Foreshadowing: The timeline explicitly connects the murder directly to his escape into the mountains, showing cause and immediate effect.

Q6

How did Kuduz evade capture for years?

Kuduz evaded capture by living in remote mountain hides and settlements far from the city where the murders occurred. The isolated terrain made it extremely difficult for law enforcement to find him. Years passed as he lived as a fugitive, with the mountains serving as both his prison and sanctuary.

Q7

What was Kuduz's crime before going to prison?

The film establishes Kuduz as a petty criminal who served time in prison, though the specific crimes are not detailed in the summary. What matters is that after his release, he was determined to leave that criminal past behind and build an honest life with Badema, trying to start a legitimate construction business.

Q8

Why did Kuduz care for Amela despite killing her mother?

Kuduz continued to care for Amela because of the pure, true love that existed between them throughout the story. Even after the violence and betrayal, he saw her as his family. Their bond represents the story's core hope, that true love can endure even after tragic loss. Amela became his connection to something good and innocent in his life.

Q10

What ultimately happened to Kuduz?

Q11

Why is the movie considered a tragedy?

The movie is considered a tragedy because it follows a classic tragic arc: a man tries to escape his past and build a honest life, but his inherent flaws (jealousy, passion, inability to control his emotions) lead to his downfall. The story is driven by base human emotions, love, betrayal, jealousy, culminating in a violent act that destroys everything he tried to build.
