What Happens in Kunukkitta Kozhi: Full Plot Summary

The whole story of Kunukkitta Kozhi (1992) explained, from the opening scene to the final frame: every key event, every twist and what it all adds up to. Read it as a quick recap before the sequel, to check a scene you missed, or to finally understand what really happened.

Unnikrishnan Jagadish is a street-smart, jobless youth who is desperate to land a steady opportunity. In a tense job interview, Rupini as Swarnalatha outsmarts him by telling the manager that she is his wife, explaining that their dire situation is a result of his irresponsible behavior. The manager, who had been irritated by his earlier interview, offers Swarnalatha the job out of sympathy. When Unnikrishnan learns of this, he demands half of her salary, setting up a difficult power dynamic between them.

Meanwhile, Swarnalatha's close friend Indumathy Parvathi and her husband Viswanathan Siddique are facing financial trouble, with Viswanathan unable to repay loans they took out. Circumstances push Unnikrishnan into a case of mistaken identity: Indumathy's grandmother Philomina mistakes him for Viswanathan and invites him and Indumathy—the granddaughter who had eloped with Viswanathan—back to their ancestral home. To avoid upsetting her grandmother, Indumathy and Unnikrishnan pretend to be husband and wife, and Swarnalatha also stays with them.

The arrival of Viswanathan adds to the confusion, starting with him assaulting Unnikrishnan and throwing the fragile arrangement into further chaos. As old grievances, debts, and loyalties collide, the story unfolds through a complex web of mistaken identities and pragmatic schemes, all while keeping a tone that lingers between humor and tension.

The questions people ask most about Kunukkitta Kozhi (1992): what happens in the confusing scenes, why the characters do what they do, the twists, hidden details and what the ending means. Each answer contains spoilers.

Q1

Why does Swarnalatha pretend to be Unnikrishnan's wife at the job interview?

Swarnalatha intervenes during Unnikrishnan's job interview when she sees him struggling. By claiming to be his wife and describing their dire financial situation, she manipulates the manager's sympathy. The manager, who was already irritated with Unnikrishnan's performance, offers him the job out of pity rather than merit, using the supposed family hardship as justification.

Foreshadowing: The ruse sets up the central power dynamic where Unnikrishnan feels entitled to demand a share of her salary.

Q2

Why does Unnikrishnan demand half of Swarnalatha's salary after learning about the deception?

When Unnikrishnan discovers that Swarnalatha secured the job through deception, he sees it as an opportunity rather than a betrayal. He believes he is entitled to share in the wages because the job was originally meant for him, even though he failed the interview on his own merits. His demand for half her salary creates conflict and establishes the transactional nature of their relationship.

Foreshadowing: This conflict establishes the power struggle that continues throughout the film.

Q3

Why does Indumathy's grandmother mistake Unnikrishnan for Viswanathan?

The grandmother has not seen Viswanathan since he eloped with Indumathy, which brought shame to the family. When she encounters Unnikrishnan, she assumes he is Viswanathan because she expects him to return seeking reconciliation. The similarity in appearance and the circumstances of his arrival near Indumathy lead her to believe he is the husband who abandoned the family.

Foreshadowing: The grandmother's willingness to welcome Viswanathan back reveals her desire to restore family honor.

Q4

Why does Indumathy go along with pretending Unnikrishnan is her husband?

Indumathy agrees to the pretense to avoid scandal and protect her grandmother's feelings. Since she had eloped with Viswanathan against her family's wishes, bringing shame to the household, she cannot reveal that Viswanathan has returned in a negative context. Pretending that Unnikrishnan is her husband allows her to maintain peace and keep the family's honor intact while Viswanathan remains in the background.

Foreshadowing: This decision traps all characters deeper in the web of deception.

Q5

Why does Viswanathan assault Unnikrishnan when he arrives at the ancestral home?

Viswanathan returns to find another man living with his wife Indumathy under the pretense of being her husband. Believing he has been replaced, Viswanathan attacks Unnikrishnan in a fit of rage and jealousy. The assault demonstrates the volatile situation created by the mistaken identity and reveals the emotional stakes underlying the financial conflicts.

Foreshadowing: This violent confrontation marks the turning point where the deception threatens to completely unravel.

How does Indumathy and Viswanathan's financial trouble connect to the main story?

The couple's inability to repay their loans creates the circumstances that draw Unnikrishnan into their lives. Their financial desperation forces Viswanathan into a difficult position, and when the grandmother mistakes Unnikrishnan for Viswanathan, it provides a solution to their problems. The money troubles serve as the engine that drives the characters into increasingly complicated deceptions.

Foreshadowing: Financial desperation underlies most of the characters' decisions throughout the film.

Q7

Why does Swarnalatha agree to stay with the fake family arrangement?

Swarnalatha continues living with the makeshift family because she has nowhere else to go and her job is tied to this living situation. Having secured employment through the deception, staying allows her to maintain the job and financial stability. Her continued participation becomes necessary to sustain the overall ruse, even as it grows more complicated.

Foreshadowing: Her presence adds another layer to the fragile deception.

Q8

What triggers the initial mistaken identity involving Unnikrishnan?

The mistaken identity is triggered when circumstances lead Unnikrishnan to be near Indumathy's family home at a vulnerable moment. The grandmother, desperate to reconcile with the husband who eloped with her granddaughter, sees Unnikrishnan and assumes he is Viswanathan come to make amends. Her emotional need to restore the family drives her to extend the invitation without verification.

Foreshadowing: The grandmother's desire for family reunion creates the opportunity for the deception.

Why does the story involve so many characters pretending to be someone they're not?

Each character adopts a false identity or role due to desperate circumstances driven by poverty, family honor, and survival. Swarnalatha pretends to be a wife to help a stranger get a job. Indumathy pretends Unnikrishnan is her husband to preserve family peace. The multiple deceptions intersect because each character is trying to solve an immediate problem without understanding how it affects others, creating a chain of complications.
