Khrustalyov, My Car!

On the first day of the cold spring of 1953, Fireman Fedya Aramyshev is arrested by authorities as the regime tightens its grip. At nearly the same time, Joseph Stalin is found lying on the floor of his dacha, signaling a sudden collapse of the leadership. The dual events set the atmosphere of fear and imminent upheaval that frames the rest of the film.

Stalin's discovery triggers a cascade of power moves among the security elite, foreshadowing the abrupt end of his era. The country braces for purges and the scramble to control information and loyalties. The moment serves as a backdrop for Klensky's looming fate.

We are introduced to General Yuri Klensky, serving in the military-medical service, as the Doctors' Plot ripples through the country. Klensky, who is Jewish, medicates his anxiety with heavy drinking while fearing that Soviet justice will reach him. The plot reveals a regime increasingly targeting professionals in the name of national security.

In an early surreal moment, Klensky encounters his own double while hospitalized, a sign of his paranoia and the sense that he is being watched. The image underscores the instability and paranoia that will characterize his later arrest.

A foreign-looking visitor arrives at Klensky's home bearing news about a relative living abroad. Suspecting provocation, Klensky violently shoves the foreigner down the stairs, a reckless act that would attract attention from security and informants. This incident seeds the chain of events leading to his downfall.

A local informant relays to the MGB that Klensky has contact with foreigners, increasing the likelihood of arrest and the stigma of disloyalty. The state machine closes in on him as suspicions mount.

Klensky tries to escape but is captured by authorities. His family is evicted to a crowded communal apartment, and he endures detention. In prison, he is brutalized, even raped by criminals, illustrating the dehumanizing cruelty of the era.

Miraculously, the bloodied general is taken from his cell to the countryside to treat a high-ranking patient. To Klensky's shock, that patient is Stalin, whose condition is hopeless as he wheezes and suffers. The episode exposes the arbitrary mercy and peril of the regime.

Beria's voice utters the first sentence of post-Stalinist Russia: Khrustalyov, My Car! The line marks a shift in power and the regime's new political order even as Stalin's health collapses.

Immediately released, Klensky does not return to medicine. Instead he chooses to go to the people, signaling a break with his former role and a reshaped sense of duty under the new order.

By the film's end, Klensky is the commandant of a train, a stark reversal from doctor to bureaucrat. He drinks happily, balancing a glass of port on his shaved head, a visual metaphor for the numbness and absurdity of life under totalitarian rule.
