Khamoshiyan

Novelist Kabir Malhotra arrives in Kashmir in search of inspiration after a failed career and a broken relationship. He checks into a guesthouse run by the enigmatic Meera, hoping the isolation will spark a new story. On his first night, he begins to see strange apparitions around the house.

Kabir learns that Meera has not left the house for two years, a clue to a hidden past. He becomes intrigued and drawn to her mystery. The strange quiet of the house hints at something unsettled beneath the surface.

Kabir decides to take Meera away from the house, hoping to break free from the haunting. As they drive off, an unseen force blocks their way and triggers a crash on the road outside the guesthouse. They survive, but the incident deepens the sense of danger surrounding them.

Kabir contacts a Tantrik who assesses the haunting and reveals an evil spirit inhabiting the house. He identifies the spirit as Jaidev, the dead husband, and explains the danger looming over Meera. This discovery reframes Kabir's understanding of the events and their stakes.

Kabir recalls Meera speaking with a voice that sounds like a man and begins to doubt Jaidev's existence. He realises Meera may be living with a deceased husband’s influence rather than a real partner. The mystery deepens as the line between living and dead blurs.

Kabir sneaks into Jaidev's bedroom to uncover the truth, only to find Jaidev sleeping. Meera storms in and orders him to leave, escalating the tension and cementing the sense that something otherworldly is at play.

Kabir returns to apologize and writes a love poem for Meera. She reads it, kisses him, and reveals her backstory: two years earlier she was involved in a hit-and-run, fled to Kashmir, and met Jaidev, with whom she fell in love and married. The revelation explains her fear and captivity within the house.

One night Meera sees Jaidev perform a ritual slaughter and pray to the devil. In a struggle, he falls from the balcony, is paralyzed, and later commits suicide. He leaves a letter implying Meera's guilt and binding her to the house forever.

Meera stays in the house with Jaidev's soul, maintaining the illusion that her husband is alive to evade imprisonment and protect herself. The threat becomes an intimate, psychological hold over her life. She fears any attempt to flee would expose her supposed crime.

Kabir discovers there is no real lawyer; Jaidev's bluff was a trap to keep Meera from escaping. He and Meera decide to confront the haunting and try to lay Jaidev’s spirit to rest. They plan to retrieve the letter that supposedly proves Meera's guilt.

They cremate Jaidev's body and a painting of him smiles sadistically, foreshadowing his continued haunt. A butterfly and paintings of wolves become ominous symbols as Jaidev's spirit returns to torment Meera and attempts to trap her within the painting. Kabir seeks help from the Tantrik, who explains the painting is a portal to the spirit world and hands him holy water.

Kabir drinks a drop of Jaidev's blood to invite Jaidev's spirit into his body, then consumes holy water to release the evil. Jaidev's malevolent presence perishes, freeing Meera from the haunting. The couple appears to start anew, in a calmer, more hopeful mood.

In the film's ending, Kabir is shown at a book launch for his latest novel, Khamoshiyan. Meera attends but the two leave together to spend time alone, implying they have escaped the haunting, at least for now. The scene closes with a sense of uneasy peace between them.
