Razak Kottekkad [Sreenivasan] is a migrant social worker in Saudi Arabia who works to identify “unknown Indians” whose bodies arrive at the mortuary and to secure their return home.

Aswathi [Kavya Madhavan] is a lower-middle-class Malayali woman from Pattambi, Kerala. She marries a thug named Radhakrishnan [Biju Menon] who confesses to her about his premarital life and promises a complete change. Unfortunately, after a short period of happy life, he dies from drowning. Facing the financial strain of her family and the abrupt loss of her husband, Aswathi becomes the breadwinner of the household and decides to pursue work in the Persian Gulf. Usman [Suraj Venjaramoodu], the car driver for an Arab family and a member of Aswathi’s village, arranges her visa and brings her to Saudi Arabia. Once there, she is forced to wear a burqa at all times due to the country’s strict dress code. She is drawn into a harsh, slave-like routine as a maid under a sponsor.

Aswathi endures numerous troubles—sexual abuse and physical violence in the sponsor’s house. She is accompanied by Usman, who had brought her to these circumstances, but he himself abuses power and engages in a sexual affair with the Indonesian maid and is eventually expelled from the sponsor’s household. In a bid to survive, Aswathi helps another maid escape, even as she herself faces further punishment.

The narrative then follows Razak [Sreenivasan] as he traces the missing Aswathi, who had disappeared while trying to flee her torment. Parallel moments show Aswathi encountering a mix of good and bad people, her journey culminating in deportation. After enduring even more hardship, she reconnects with Razak, who has been searching for her all along. He learns the full story and ultimately helps Aswathi return home to Kerala.

Q1

Why did Aswathi marry Radhakrishnan despite knowing he was a thug?

A.

Aswathi married Radhakrishnan because he confessed about his premarital life and promised to reform completely. Coming from a lower-middle-class family facing financial pressure, she believed his promise of a fresh start and a comfortable future. However, this hope was short-lived as he died by drowning shortly after their marriage, leaving her widowed and financially strained.

Q2

Why did Aswathi decide to work in Saudi Arabia instead of finding work in Kerala?

A.

After her husband's death, Aswathi became the sole breadwinner for her family and faced severe financial pressure. With limited opportunities in Pattambi, Kerala, she chose to pursue work in the Persian Gulf where wages were significantly higher. Usman, a village car driver familiar with Gulf work pathways, arranged her visa and facilitated her travel, making Saudi Arabia the apparent solution to her financial crisis.

Q3

Why was Usman expelled from the sponsor's household?

A.

Usman, who had arranged Aswathi's visa and brought her to Saudi Arabia, abused his position of power by engaging in a sexual affair with an Indonesian maid working in the same household. His inappropriate conduct and exploitation of his authority led to his expulsion from the sponsor's household, leaving Aswathi even more vulnerable in a foreign land.

Q4

Why did Aswathi help another maid escape despite knowing the risks?

A.

Despite her own precarious situation, Aswathi helped another maid flee from the sponsor's exploitative environment because she recognized the harsh realities of slave-like labor and abuse that both faced. This act of solidarity demonstrated her courage and moral resolve, though it also escalated her own danger and led to further punishment.

Q7

Why was Aswathi forced to wear a burqa in Saudi Arabia?

A.

Upon arrival in Saudi Arabia, Aswathi was forced to wear a burqa at all times due to the country's strict dress code that applies to all women. Aswathi became trapped in a sponsor-driven system that commodified domestic labor with virtually no protections for migrant workers. Within this exploitative structure, she endured sexual abuse and physical violence as part of a slave-like routine. The sponsor system gave employers enormous power over domestic workers with minimal accountability, making abuse a common risk for women in her position.
