Investigative journalist Nick McKenzie revisits a disturbing case when a tip leads him to suspect renewed sex trafficking activity in South Melbourne. Years prior, McKenzie's reporting exposed the trafficking of Asian women to Australia, bringing the issue to international attention. This observational documentary follows him as he conducts undercover surveillance, infiltrating brothels and motels to confront those allegedly involved. Through firsthand accounts of survivors and a deep dive into the criminal underworld, McKenzie aims to expose the ongoing problem and pressure the government to take action against this pervasive crime.

In California, an eighteen-year-old named Sara faces leaving her foster home and hopes for a brighter future. She is offered training to become a waitress on cruise ships, a path that seems promising, but it quickly turns grim when Diane betrays her and sells her to sex traffickers. The film then shifts to a harsher landscape of exploitation and control, where Sara’s resilience and quick thinking are put to the test.
Across the world, in India, Amba experiences a brutal assault while out with friends. A man she had rejected tries again, and the night ends with acid being thrown on her and her companion, leaving Amba scarred and her friend disfigured. The trauma deepens as Amba is forced into sex slavery, her autonomy stripped away, and the weight of shame and fear pressing down on her every move.
The two women, Sara and Amba, eventually converge in a Texas brothel owned by Simon. There they share the company of Mali, a woman from Nigeria, and all three endure repeated rapes as they navigate a brutal system built on domination and fear. Mali urges them to do what they must to survive, offering the cruel but pragmatic counsel that resistance can be deadly. Amba, overwhelmed by her abortion and the pain that follows, seems momentarily defeated, while Sara’s stubborn will to escape keeps her anchored to the possibility of freedom.
A fragile plan begins to take shape when Sara discovers that Simon will be away for the night with most of his men, leaving only a guard named Max on duty. She works with Amba and Mali to exploit that window of opportunity. Sara slips sleeping pills into Max’s drink to render him unconscious, and the trio makes a first move to flee. Amba is initially hesitant to go, still grieving her abortion and the risk of facing her family’s judgment, but she ultimately joins the others as they steel themselves for a dangerous departure.
The escape is messy and costly. Mali delivers a swift blow to the sleeping guard, and the three flee the brothel, racing toward the nearby train station. They reach the station, only to find the train already gone. Mali trips, injuring her ankle, and the pursuit intensifies. Simon learns of the escape and rushes back with a sense of urgency, while another guard, Gameboy, begins systematically searching the station and the adjacent truck stop.
As Mali presses through the pain, Amba and Sara urge her to press on, even as the danger closes in. Mali’s cries spill out, drawing attention and forcing the trio to scatter and seek shelter in a nearby truck. They make their way to a bus station, where they buy tickets and briefly believe they’ve found a route to safety. However, Simon tracks the buses, and the chase continues as the would-be fugitives dodge and hide from him.
Against the odds, Sara is eventually reunited with her younger sister, a moment of emotional relief that underscores the human stakes of the ordeal. Amba, in turn, reaches out to her own family, and her call brings joy to those who hear her voice. In the aftermath, Simon and Diane are arrested, along with many others involved in the trafficking operation.
The film closes on a somber note for Mali. After a harrowing night, she is shown with a group of prostitutes, holding one of them and crying as the person she was holding is taken away. The story remains focused on the strength and vulnerability of the women who endure unimaginable abuse, and the slim thread of hope that keeps them moving toward a safer future.
