Allen Karroll is a cynical writer who hates Christmas, yet he works at a greeting card company. He carries a sharp rivalry with his neighbor Zeb Rosecog, a grumpy, antisocial former CEO who once ran the company. On Christmas Eve, a confrontation with Rosecog lands him in trouble on a bus and he collides with a child. When the boy calls him “grumpy,” he refuses to help, further setting the day’s tense tone. A disastrous presentation to the company’s only major client threatens his job and strains his relationship with his girlfriend, jeopardizing her secret plan to propose that night. The morning-after fallout leaves him adrift, and the thread of his life feels tired and brittle.
After his girlfriend leaves, he is visited by the ghost of Jacob Marley (noted as related to Bob Marley), who mistakes him for Rosecog because of a wrong address and delivers a warning: he will be visited by the ghosts of Christmas Present, Past, and Future. The visitation sets in motion a strange, glowing sequence where the boundaries of time bend and a magical lesson begins to unfold.
The first ghost, Christmas Present, refuses to acknowledge the mix-up at first. Through a magical remote control capable of transporting them through space and time, she shows him the real impact Rosecog has had on the people around him. He witnesses Rosecog attempting to sue a family over shoveled sidewalks, and the little boy from earlier is part of that family, punished harshly because Karroll did not vouch for him. Curious about the remote, Karroll probes it, triggering a journey that travels to a past Christmas when he met Carrie and reveals that not every Christmas is a lost cause.
The next ghost, Christmas Past, recognizes that Karroll is not Rosecog but persuades him to continue the journey anyway. They travel back in time to see Rosecog as an idealistic family man, gradually eroded by an obsession with work that keeps him away from a dying wife. Later, they witness a now-jaded Rosecog announcing that he will sell the company after losing the two people he loved most in the world. The journey also revisits Karroll’s own past, where he publicly proposed to his then-girlfriend Lisa while wearing a caribou costume; she rejects him and reveals that she was cheating.
The final ghost, Christmas Future, acknowledges the mix-up but remains determined to guide the vision forward. They watch Rosecog die alone in a hospital room, his belongings sold or discarded, and he dies with the mistaken belief that his daughter wanted nothing to do with him—when in truth she was unable to reach him in time. Karroll also learns that he has lost his job and that Carrie has broken up with him.
Karroll wakes with renewed resolve on Christmas Day and decides to mend fences with Rosecog. He tries to use the remote again, but it breaks in the process. Undeterred, he finds another path to connection by humming the Christmas song that had been playing near his wife’s deathbed, which helps him reach Rosecog. The two men reconcile, and Rosecog drops the lawsuit while Karroll testifies to the child’s innocence. With the help of the three ghosts, Karroll also seizes a reindeer suit and sneaks into his girlfriend’s concert to propose. She accepts, confessing that she was about to propose herself. In a final turn of fate, Karroll saves his job by presenting a popup card design that Rosecog had created, showing that even a cynical heart can rediscover Christmas magic.
