Karma (1986) – Full Plot Summary & Ending Explained

Read the complete plot breakdown of Karma (1986), including all key story events, major twists, and the ending explained in detail. Discover what really happened—and what it all means.

Rana Vishwa Pratap Singh, an ex-high-ranking police officer, runs a jail famed for rehabilitating criminals. When he learns that Dr. Michael Dang, the head of the terrorist group Black Star, has been captured and is being moved to his facility, the stage is set for a fierce showdown. A tense argument with a jail warden escalates after Dang assaults the warden, and Vishwa slaps him in response. Dang vows revenge, a threat that will soon test everyone involved.

While Vishwa is away, Black Star launches a daring breakout, freeing Dang, destroying the prison, and ripping apart Vishwa’s family who live nearby. His wife, Rukmani Singh, survives the onslaught but loses her speech; their other child is killed, leaving Vishwa to mourn a shattered life. After a period of mourning, he resolves to hunt Dang and dismantle Black Star once and for all, a mission the Indian Government formally approves.

To carry out the mission, he recruits Baiju Thakur, Johnny / Gyaneshwar, and Khairuddin “Khairu” Chishti, a former terrorist who has his own doubts about the plan. Disguised as forest rangers, the quartet sets up bases near the Indian border where Dang’s compound is believed to lie. The teamwork strengthens as they train, forging a close bond, and in the process, romance blossoms: Radha falls for Baiju, and Tulsi grows fond of Johnny.

But not everyone agrees with every choice. Khairu pleads with Vishwa to let Baiju and Johnny return to civilian life, arguing that they have changed. Vishwa remains wary and focused on the mission, convinced their only motive is justice. The pursuit reaches a brutal turning point when terrorists shoot Vishwa as he shields Baiju, Johnny, and Khairu in a nearby building, leaving him hospitalized. The three soldiers are shaken but resolve to finish what Singh started.

With renewed determination, they secure a strategic breakthrough: intelligence confirms the location of Dr. Dang’s compound, and Indian Army soldiers held captive by the terrorists are freed as part of the operation. Infiltration follows, culminating in a daring move to cripple the munitions center—a critical strike that could cripple Black Star’s capabilities. The plan reaches its apex when Khairu proposes driving a truck loaded with explosives into the core of the building. Baiju and Johnny hesitate, fearing the cost in lives, but Khairu chooses to sacrifice himself for the mission’s success.

Reinvigorated, Johnny and Baiju slip back into the main complex and eliminate the remaining terrorists, bringing the siege to a close. A swift recovery for Singh allows him to rejoin the climactic confrontation, where he defeats Dr. Dang, sealing the victory and restoring a sense of justice. In the aftermath, Rukmani’s speech returns, a quiet sign of healing for the family.

The film closes with recognition and reconciliation: the surviving soldiers are awarded bravery medals, Khairu is posthumously honored, and equality is underscored as Baiju and Johnny celebrate marriages to Radha and Tulsi, respectively, marking a hopeful, if hard-won, peace.
