From the snow‑capped hills of Kashmir to the tropical coast of Kanyakumari, the film paints a vivid portrait of a system where a simple stamp or licence can hinge on a hidden ledger of favors. At the centre of this world is Kimtilal Saxena, a newly appointed clerk whose attempts at integrity are constantly undermined by the expectations of those who line his desk. His wife Shanti and their son Kamal become the focal points of his quiet compromises, while Kamini Sampat, the headstrong daughter of a powerful businessman, drifts into the same orbit. The ambitious Sampat father watches his daughter’s choices with a mixture of pride and rigid class consciousness. Across the hallway, Girdharilal and his son Vijay represent a parallel family, their friendship with the Saxenas deepening the tangle of loyalties and expectations that bind the community together.
