Joe Dirt, played by David Spade, is an eccentrically upbeat, mullet-wearing, southern rock and muscle car aficionado who finds himself in the unlikely role of a janitor at a Los Angeles radio station. His peculiar charm makes him the perfect subject for the sharp-tongued deejay, Zander Kelly, who is reminiscent of Howard Stern. For three days, a captivated audience listens in as Joe narrates his unbelievable journey to find the parents who abandoned him at the Grand Canyon when he was just eight years old, giving him the infamous nickname "Joe Dirt."

In a series of comedic misadventures, Joe’s trials include being swept away in a hot air balloon, rocketing to an oil rig job that ends with him losing that position, improperly using an "Indian tracker," and humorously failing to find his parents through a convoluted blackmail scheme involving a septic tank. As he traverses through these mishaps, Joe takes a job at a carnival where he struggles to connect with the alluring Jill, also facing misunderstandings about their relationship.
