Masashi Kusakabe relocates to a charming suburban area with his mother, Yasuko, as they start a new chapter in their lives. This move is bittersweet for Masashi as he leaves behind the haunting memories of his deceased father, seeking a fresh beginning away from his grief.

While exploring his new surroundings, Masashi discovers a curious jellyfish-like creature which he names Kurage-bo. They quickly form an inseparable bond, enjoying each other's company, especially their shared love for chee-kama.

Masashi begins his first day at school, hiding Kurage-bo in his backpack, feeling anxious about keeping their relationship a secret. To his surprise, he notices that many of his classmates also have unique creatures known as F.R.I.E.N.D.s.

During class, Masashi is challenged by a classmate named Tatsuya. In a dramatic showdown, Kurage-bo displays its kung-fu skills and defeats Tatsuya's F.R.I.E.N.D., impressing not only Masashi but their classmates as well.

Upon returning home, Masashi finds his uncle Naoto arguing with his mother, Yasuko, about the dangers of their new town. Naoto warns her about the treachery, suggesting they may not be safe while Yasuko expresses her defiance.

Masashi unexpectedly encounters his peers battling at a serene shrine, where he is pressured to join the conflict. In the chaos, Kurage-bo goes missing, causing Masashi to panic until Luxor, Saki's F.R.I.E.N.D., aids in the battle.

After the battle, Saki confides in Masashi about her Device, explaining how it was given to her by mysterious figures linked to a local research center, presenting themselves as 'heralds of hope' during a turbulent family period.

As the school festival takes place, Saki's mother leads a protest against the university's research that is causing unrest in the town. The contrast between the festive atmosphere and the political tensions highlights the conflicts brewing beneath the surface.

Tatsuya and Juran team up against Masashi, kidnapping Kurage-bo, which causes devastation for him. This act draws the attention of the school's gym teacher, who punishes the boys for their cruel actions toward Masashi and Kurage-bo.

During a hospital visit, Naoto gives Masashi a Device claimed to be for his protection, raising alarm bells in Masashi's mind amidst the unfolding chaos. The gesture feels off as it comes during a time filled with uncertainty and danger.

News of Naoto's shocking demise grips Masashi, complicating the already heavy burden of grief from his father. Amid his torment, he becomes determined to rescue Kurage-bo and delve deeper into the mystery surrounding the Black-Cloaked Four.

Masashi and Saki confront Tatsuya and Juran, who now have aligned with the ominous Cloak Four. This intense showdown sees the truth about Naoto's connection to the research facility come to light as their battle intensifies.

The climactic conflict escalates as Koh reveals his alter ego, Ko2, and leads an attack against Yupi and Shimon. A series of battles ensues, culminating in Masashi intervening when defeat seems imminent for his friends.

In a tense moment, Saki is rescued by Masashi, demonstrating their deepened bond amidst the chaos. As Naoto reveals vulnerabilities related to the Oval, they devise a plan to eliminate the overwhelming threats surrounding them.

The resolution occurs as the fierce conflict subsides, leading to the poignant return of Kurage-bo. Masashi, Saki, and their friends rejoice in a moment of resilience, symbolizing hope and a brighter future ahead.
