What Happens in Indru Netru Naalai: Full Plot Summary

The whole story of Indru Netru Naalai (2015) explained, from the opening scene to the final frame: every key event, every twist and what it all adds up to. Read it as a quick recap before the sequel, to check a scene you missed, or to finally understand what really happened.

In 2065, a scientist invents a time machine and, to prove its power, sends it back to 2015 with the instruction to return within forty seconds. Yet the device never comes back, leaving the scientist to wonder if the experiment has truly worked.

The moment the machine appears in 2015, it is witnessed by three people: a driven but struggling entrepreneur named Elango, who is fighting to get his ideas heard while keeping a fragile relationship with his wealthy girlfriend, Anu; Arumugam, his loyal but duplicitous best friend who makes a living as a fake astrologer; and Giridhara Parthasarathy, an inventor who repairs home appliances. The trio experiences a sudden accident that brings them face-to-face with the mysterious device. Parthasarathy initially plans to keep the machine for himself, but a shock leaves him in a coma, and Elango and Arumugam seize the opportunity to take it for their own ends.

With the machine in hand, the two con artists begin testing its possibilities. They use it to bolster Arumugam’s astrology practice, traveling briefly into the past to uncover things people have misplaced and then presenting them as miraculous “revelations.” The scheme works, feeding Arumugam’s reputation and drawing in clients who believe in his supposedly clairvoyant abilities. The ruse gives Elango a taste of success, and he soon devises a larger plan: he travels to the future to gather stock-market results and publicly predicts them in front of the industrialist Rajarathinam’s board, a bold move that finally earns the approval of Anu’s powerful father.

Soon enough, the couple’s wedding looks set, and the path to a bright future seems clear—at least on the surface. But trouble arrives when an attempted assassination of Rajarathinam is foiled not by careful planning, but by a reckless manipulation of time. Kuzhandaivelu, a feared gangster who has been targeting Rajarathinam, is outraged by the failed kill and the audacious interference by the two time-travelers. In the present, Kuzhandaivelu makes it his business to eliminate not only Rajarathinam but also Elango and Arumugam, who inadvertently stepped into his path during their past-hopping.

The reality of their tampering begins to unravel. In an effort to fix things, the pair heads back to the past to undo their mistake, but Kuzhandaivelu fires during a confrontation and injures the time machine, damaging it beyond easy repair. Desperate, they find Parthasarathy awake from his coma, but the inventor does not remember them. He works to repair the machine, though the rebuilt device can only shuttle the user to a fixed moment in the past—the moment when Kuzhandaivelu damaged it. There is no way to return to the future, forcing the duo to rethink their plan.

As the pursuit escalates, Kuzhandaivelu spots them at a mall and open-fires, killing Anu. Grief and desperation push Elango to try one last gambit: use the time machine to travel to the past and kill Kuzhandaivelu, hoping to restore Anu’s life. But the pursuit continues, and a violent struggle leads all three—Elango, Arumugam, and Kuzhandaivelu—into the time machine, hurtling them into the past once again. Kuzhandaivelu destroys the machine in the ensuing chaos, yet Elango manages to outsmart him by getting Kuzhandaivelu to shoot his own past self, ensuring both versions die.

With the immediate danger behind them, Elango and Arumugam realize their earlier acts created the timeline they now inhabit. They deliberately resist the urge to uncover or claim the machine, effectively erasing their role in the accident involving Parthasarathy. In the new timeline, two months pass and Elango awakens to a morning that starts with a wedding—he is about to marry Anu, but his memories of the night’s events have faded. He discovers that, in this version of events, he found a job and impressed Rajarathinam with a business idea, leading to his marriage with Anu. Arumugam, too, is content in his own life, completely unaware of the past two months’ upheaval.

Parthasarathy is seen again, but he does not recognize Elango or Arumugam, having never met them in this altered reality. Kuzhandaivelu is dead in this timeline, and the time machine remains unseen by anyone, as if it never existed at all. The scientist behind the original invention is faced with the quiet triumph of a device that, in the end, did not alter the future he believed he could shape. The machine’s first voyage to the past leads to a quiet, almost banal present where Elango and Arumugam live ordinary lives, their memories of the night erased, and their futures secure in the absence of any time-travel consequences.

In the final frame, the device that sparked such upheaval never resurfaces, returning to 2065 as if it had always belonged there, and the scientist quietly celebrates the success of a machine that rewrote nothing—except the lives of those who dared to bend time. The story closes on a note of careful restraint: a reminder that even with incredible power, some choices may not be worth the cost, and some lives may be better off unaltered by the hands of time.

Indru Netru Naalai Plot Explained: Your Questions Answered

The questions people ask most about Indru Netru Naalai (2015): what happens in the confusing scenes, why the characters do what they do, the twists, hidden details and what the ending means. Each answer contains spoilers.

Q1

Why does Elango use the time machine to predict stock market results?

Elango uses the time machine to travel to the future and gather stock market information, which he then presents as his own predictions during a board meeting. This calculated move is designed to impress Anu's powerful father, Rajarathinam, who previously dismissed Elango's business ideas. The successful prediction earns Rajarathinam's approval and removes the obstacle preventing Elango from marrying Anu.

Foreshadowing: Earlier, Elango struggles to get his ideas heard while maintaining a fragile relationship with his wealthy girlfriend Anu, establishing his desperation for validation.

  • elango
  • stock market
  • time machine
  • prediction
  • rajarathinam

Q2

How does Elango's time travel accidentally save Kuzhandaivelu?

When Elango and Arumugam attempt to fix their earlier mistake by traveling back in time, their interference inadvertently prevents Kuzhandaivelu's assassination attempt on Rajarathinam. The gangster's original plan fails not because of careful planning, but because the time-travelers' reckless manipulation creates a chain of events that saves Rajarathinam's life, along with Kuzhandaivelu's, who would have been killed during the failed assassination.

Foreshadowing: The film establishes early that time travel creates unpredictable consequences, starting with Parthasarathy's coma.

  • assassination
  • rajarathinam

Q3

Why does Anu die in the mall?

Anu is killed when Kuzhandaivelu tracks down Elango and Arumugam at a shopping mall and opens fire. The gangster targets them after they repeatedly interfered with his plans to eliminate Rajarathinam. Anu's death is a direct consequence of Elango and Arumugam's time-traveling escapades, as Kuzhandaivelu views anyone connected to them as collateral damage in his mission.

Foreshadowing: Earlier, Kuzhandaivelu vows to eliminate not only Rajarathinam but also Elango and Arumugam for stepping into his path.

Q4

How does Elango manage to kill Kuzhandaivelu using his own past self?

In the chaotic final confrontation, Elango manipulates Kuzhandaivelu into chasing him toward his own past self who is about to fire at the time machine. When present-day Kuzhandaivelu encounters his past version, Elango triggers a situation where the gangster fires at his own past self, causing both versions to die simultaneously. This paradox eliminates the immediate threat while erasing the timeline where the killings occurred.

Foreshadowing: The film's time travel rules establish that actions in the past directly affect the present, making this paradox possible.

Q5

Why doesn't Parthasarathy recognize Elango in the new timeline?

In the new timeline created after Elango and Arumugam choose not to claim the time machine, they never encounter Parthasarathy during the original accident. Since Parthasarathy only met them because of the time machine incident that left him in a coma, without that meeting, he has no memory of them. The timeline reset effectively erases their entire relationship from existence.

Foreshadowing: Parthasarathy's coma was directly caused by the time machine's arrival, linking his fate to their involvement with the device.

Q6

What happens to the time machine at the end of the movie?

The time machine is destroyed during the chaotic confrontation when all three, Elango, Arumugam, and Kuzhandaivelu, are thrust back into the past. Kuzhandaivelu destroys the machine in the struggle. However, in the final frame, the device mysteriously returns to 2065 as if it had always belonged there, appearing in the scientist's laboratory. The machine never resurfaces in the new timeline, effectively vanishing from existence in that reality.

Foreshadowing: The scientist's original experiment was to send the machine back to 2015 and have it return within forty seconds, its eventual return fulfills this purpose while remaining unseen in the altered timeline.

Q7

How is the new timeline at the end created?

After defeating Kuzhandaivelu, Elango and Arumugam realize their earlier actions created the troubled timeline they inhabited. They deliberately choose not to uncover or claim the time machine when it appears in 2015, effectively erasing their entire involvement with the device. This decision prevents Parthasarathy's accident, Kuzhandaivelu's entry into their lives, and all the subsequent consequences, creating a new timeline where they never used time travel at all.

Foreshadowing: The film establishes that time travel creates alternate timelines, with earlier choices directly shaping later events.

  • new timeline
  • reset
  • choice
  • time machine
  • parthasarathy

Q8

Why can the repaired time machine only go to one specific moment in the past?

After Kuzhandaivelu damages the time machine during a confrontation, Parthasarathy repairs it but the rebuilt device can only shuttle to a fixed moment, the exact time when Kuzhandaivelu first damaged it. This limitation traps Elango and Arumugam, eliminating their ability to return to the future or freely navigate time. The damage creates a closed loop that forces them to use the limited options available.

Foreshadowing: The machine was damaged when Kuzhandaivelu fired at it during the confrontation in the present.

  • time machine

Q9

Why does the scientist in 2065 celebrate if the time machine changed nothing?

The scientist originally sent the time machine to 2015 with instructions to return within forty seconds to prove the device worked. In the final timeline, the machine does return to 2065, technically validating the experiment as a success. However, the scientist remains unaware that the machine's journey caused significant upheaval in 2015. His celebration is for what he believes was a successful demonstration of time travel, not for any actual change in the future.

Foreshadowing: The opening scene establishes the scientist's goal: proving the time machine's power by sending it to the past and back.

Q10

Why does Kuzhandaivelu become Elango and Arumugam's enemy?

Kuzhandaivelu targets Rajarathinam for assassination, but Elango and Arumugam's time-travel interference accidentally saves both Rajarathinam and Kuzhandaivelu during the attempt. Enraged by this interference and the failure of his plans, Kuzhandaivelu decides to kill Rajarathinam himself while also eliminating the two time-travelers who meddled in his business. Their paths collide repeatedly until they become mortal enemies.

Foreshadowing: The failed assassination is directly caused by the duo's past-hopping, establishing the causal chain that leads to the conflict.

Q11

How do Elango and Arumugam use the time machine for their astrology scam?

The duo uses the time machine to travel briefly into the past to discover where people misplaced valuable items. They then present these discoveries as miraculous revelations during Arumugam's astrology consultations, claiming divine insight. This scheme successfully builds Arumugam's reputation as a clairvoyant, drawing numerous clients who believe in his supposed supernatural abilities.

Foreshadowing: Arumugam is established as a fake astrologer who makes a living through deception before obtaining the time machine.

Q12

Why does Elango end up marrying Anu in the new timeline?

In the new timeline where Elango and Arumugam never used the time machine, Elango still finds a way to succeed. He obtains a legitimate job and impresses Rajarathinam with a genuine business idea, earning his approval without any time travel manipulation. This leads naturally to his marriage with Anu, achieving the same outcome through ordinary means.

Foreshadowing: Elango's original motivation for using the time machine was to gain Rajarathinam's approval to marry Anu.
