An 11-year-old Cameron Sparrow is attacked by a hooded stranger who tries to kill him. Cameron defends himself and kills the attacker. He then looks at the camera with red eyes, revealing that he is possessed by a demon named Maggie.

Dr. Seth Ember approaches Henry in a club and makes him realize he is dreaming. Ember reveals that the woman Henry has been with is a demon who has possessed his body. The two escape back to reality, and Henry is freed from the demon.

In the waking world, Ember uses a wheelchair. His disability stems from a car crash that killed his wife and child, the tragedy that fuels his mission to banish Maggie.

A Vatican representative named Camilla asks Ember to exorcise Cameron. Ember refuses, insisting his method is not a traditional exorcism. Camilla suggests she believes the demon is Maggie, a demon Ember already knows.

Ember visits a priest named Felix to confirm whether the demon could be Maggie. Felix confirms the demon and offers a vial of blood that could grant ten seconds of lucidity to commit suicide, but Ember declines.

Ember explains to Lindsay that he evicts demons by entering the host's subconscious to make them realize they are dreaming. He explains that demons can't truly control their hosts, instead lulling them into comforting dreams to stay hidden.

Ember, Oliver, and Riley prepare to evict the demon. They plan to induce a near-death state so Ember can synchronize his brain frequencies with Cameron's and enter his subconscious, knowing he has about eight minutes before his heart gives out.

Ember enters Cameron's dream and sees him with his father, Dan. A seizure interrupts the intrusion and the team must pull Ember out to revive him.

Dan's presence seems to help at first, but Maggie lashes out and Dan dies from his injuries. Lindsay questions Ember's past with the demon, and Ember explains that he discovered astral projection and entered dreams to help possessed people, a power he has kept secret to live a normal life.

Ember returns to Felix to obtain the blood vial, but Felix is possessed by Maggie and attacks Ember before committing suicide. The event confirms the demon's reach and deepens the danger of their mission.

Back in Cameron's dream, Ember uses a ring Cameron received from his real father to help the boy realize he is dreaming. The pair flee Maggie together and wake up from the dream.

Ember wakes up in a hospital setting with his wife and son, then realizes he is still inside a dream. He begs Maggie to release Cameron and take him instead, and the demon agrees.

Riley administers the demon-blood and Ember uses his ten seconds of lucidity to fling himself through the apartment window. He dies in the fall, and a paramedic warns not to touch his body.

Paramedics attempt to resuscitate Ember; they succeed in restoring a heartbeat. In the aftermath, Maggie possesses Camilla, ensuring the demon's presence continues in the world.
