In This Our Life

In Richmond, Virginia, Asa and Lavinia Timberlake raise two daughters named Roy and Stanley. Roy grows up to be an interior decorator and marries Dr. Peter Kingsmill. Stanley becomes engaged to progressive attorney Craig Fleming, setting up early family tensions.

One evening, with days until her wedding, Stanley runs off with her sister's husband Peter. This upheaval unsettles the family, and Craig Fleming becomes depressed, while Roy resolves to stay positive but hardened.

Roy divorces Peter; he and Stanley marry and move to Baltimore, beginning a new phase for the sisters. The split frees Roy to pursue a different life path, while Stanley ties herself to Peter in a now-shadowed marriage.

In Baltimore, Roy encounters Craig on a park bench, notices his sadness, and encourages him to embrace life. They begin dating, forming a new emotional connection amid the upheaval around them.

Roy refers Parry Clay to Craig, who hires him to work in his law office while attending law school. Parry is the son of Minerva Clay, the Timberlakes' long-time housekeeper, tying the families together through service and loyalty.

Roy’s Uncle William Fitzroy, who doted on Stanley, is upset by the upheaval and hints he will influence Craig’s practice if he stops representing poor clients. When Craig refuses, Roy is impressed by his resolve and agrees to marry Fitzroy.

In Baltimore, Stanley and Peter's marriage deteriorates as Peter drinks heavily. Deeply depressed, Peter ultimately commits suicide, leaving Stanley shaken but intact enough to return to her hometown with Roy.

Shaken by Peter's death, Stanley returns to her hometown with Roy. After she recovers from the trauma, she resolves to win back Craig, shifting her focus to old ties and lingering ambitions.

Back in their hometown, Stanley discusses her late husband's life insurance with Craig at his office and invites him to join her later for dinner. He does not show, and she proceeds with her plan, drinking and losing control.

While driving home, Stanley, drunk, hits a mother and her young daughter, killing the child. Panicking, she leaves the scene, setting off a chain of investigations that will expose the truth.

Police find Stanley's abandoned car with blood on the front end and question her. She lies, claiming Parry borrowed the car, and Parry is jailed on the strength of the accusation.

Roy suspects that Stanley is hiding the truth, and Parry's mother confirms he was at home studying that night, contradicting the alibi. Tensions rise as the web of deceit tightens.

Roy arranges for Stanley to see Parry in jail, and Stanley tries to coax him into confirming her story. Later, Craig confronts Stanley after learning from a bartender that she left the restaurant before the fatal accident.

Stanley flees to Fitzroy's house, hoping for protection, only to learn that Fitzroy has only six months to live and is too distraught to help. The weight of his illness compounds the family crisis.

Stanley is chased by the police, crashes her car, and dies in the wreck. Craig consoles Roy as authorities inform them of Stanley's death, closing a tragic chapter for the Timberlakes.

Craig is seen comforting Roy as they receive the news of Stanley's death, underscoring the complex web of relationships and the cost of lies and longing within the family.
