In the final moments of In My Mother’s Skin, Tala is left completely alone after a series of tragic events that lead to her family’s destruction. Her mother, Ligaya, succumbs to the evil fairy’s influence after being turned into a monster that kills and eats her own son, Bayani. Her father, Aldo, and the Japanese officer are killed in the chaos, and her brother Bayani also dies after being shot. With her family gone, Tala refuses the fairy’s offer of a magic fruit, which initially seemed like a solution but in reality was a trap to keep her under the fairy’s control. Instead of succumbing to evil, Tala chooses faith and hope; she lights a candle at her family’s altar, which causes the corrupt fruit to shrivel and dry up, symbolizing her rejection of the fairy’s malevolence. As she steps out of her house holding a lamp, Tala demonstrates her decision to walk through the darkness of her world alone, guided not by evil but by her own strength and belief. The ending leaves her standing resolute, embodying resilience in the face of despair, and suggesting that by rejecting evil and trusting in goodness, she can forge her own path forward.
