Set in the English village Penny Green in 1939, the film centers on Mark Sabre, Walter Pidgeon, an author and publisher who is unhappily married to Mabel Sabre, Angela Lansbury—a cold, humorless woman who spends her days gossiping with the townspeople. While his marriage feels stifling, Mark finds a spark when his former sweetheart Nona Tybar, Deborah Kerr, returns to Penny Green, bringing with her unspoken memories and complicated feelings.

Nona is married to Tony Tybar, Hugh French, but she remains deeply fond of Mark, and the old connection loosens the air in the tight-knit community. As the shadows of war grow closer, Tony is called into military service, and Mark makes a valiant but ultimately blocked attempt to enlist, a heart condition discovered by a doctor ending his military hopes. With Tony gone to the front, Nona leaves Penny Green to join the Women’s Auxiliary Air Force, leaving Mark to weather the quiet that follows.

Effie Bright, Janet Leigh, has been disowned by her father for becoming pregnant and seeks Mark’s help, turning to him as a trusted confidant. Mark offers Effie shelter in his home while he searches for a more secure arrangement for her, a decision that triggers a harsh social backlash in a town attuned to propriety. The scandal costs Mark his job, as morals and conduct clauses tighten their grip on his professional life. Mabel abandons him, and she serves Effie with divorce papers, presenting her as a co-respondent in the failed marriage.

Effie’s fragility is compounded by the stress of an uncertain future; the real father of her child has not reached out, and her situation strains her mental health. Tragically, Effie dies by poisoning herself, a suicide that shatters the community and transforms Mark’s standing among his neighbors. At Effie’s inquest, numerous witnesses offer anecdotal testimony suggesting a sexual relationship between Mark and Effie, clouding his reputation further.

Nona appears at a pivotal moment, newly aware of Tony’s death, and delivers a brief speech in support of Mark’s character, a moment that tempers the inquest’s harsh conclusions but does not erase the moral judgment hovering over him. The proceedings culminate in a censure of Mark, framing his actions within a society wary of scandal and propriety.

Back at home, Mark discovers a letter from Effie naming her lover: Harold Twyning, the son of Mark’s former coworker, James Wethered. Mark confronts Harold Twyning’s father, who is grief-stricken by the war’s toll and the loss of his son. In a tense moment, Mark chooses not to reveal the letter to the bereaved man, intending to protect him, but as he prepares to burn the letter, a heart attack overwhelms him.

Weeks pass as Mark convalesces. Nona returns to his side, and together they decide to burn Effie’s letter, a symbolic sealing of a painful chapter. The small-town drama unfolds with quiet, unflinching candor, exploring love, loyalty, social judgment, and the heavy costs of passion in a world on the brink of upheaval, where personal happiness often collides with communal expectations and the looming shadow of war.
