Leslie Whitlock schemes to have James kill his wife Ellen so he can collect her life insurance money and escape to Europe with his mistress. It's revealed that Leslie has been having an affair and wants a fresh start, but lacks the means to do so without financial resources. He offers James $10,000 and assistance fleeing the country in exchange for committing the murder.

Despite being a fugitive wrongly convicted of murder, James refuses to participate in killing an innocent woman. His moral compass remains intact even while on the run, showing he is not willing to become a murderer to secure his freedom. This decision highlights his character and sets up his later alliance with Ellen.
