James Lake, Raymond St. Jacques, is an escaped Black convict who has been wrongly imprisoned for murder. He evades a wide police search and is picked up by Leslie Whitlock, Kevin McCarthy. Leslie takes James to a mansion owned by his wife Ellen Whitlock, Dana Wynter. There, he is offered a deal: ten thousand dollars and a path to escape if he murders Ellen. James tries to warn Ellen about the trap, but his warning comes too late, and he flees back into hiding as the authorities close in. On the run, he is reminded of Lily, Barbara McNair, a nightclub singer from his past, and he realizes that hiding by himself may be impossible.
James returns to the Whitlocks' mansion and uses coercion to secure their help through police checks and to take them to their mountain cabin. It is there that Mr. Whitlock reveals his murderous plan, having been deceived by James. Ellen and James flee the cottage and decide to head to James's brother's home.
There, he learns that his brother, William Lake, Don Newsome, has married Lily, a turn of events Lily had hoped would happen if James were imprisoned for life. Lily agrees to help James prove his innocence. Lake, with help from his friends, locates the stepfather of the murdered girl, Carl Blair, Royal Dano, in a warehouse and intimidates him into confessing that he killed his own daughter. Soon, Mr. Whitlock arrives with an escort of police officers. A firefight ensues, resulting in Whitlock's death. Blair is arrested. Grateful, Ellen promises to use her wealth and power to clear James's name, though the quest exposes the discrimination he faces.
