On her wedding night, Shirin Tannaz Tabatabaei is arrested for murdering the janitor of their home building. She refuses to speak to the police, who believe the janitor was blackmailing her with something until she grew tired and decided to kill him. A detective informs her fiancé Nima Safaei that she has canceled the marriage with two other men previously, a detail that seems to be hidden from public view and one she did not want revealed. The fiancé’s father urges him to forget her, adding pressure to a story already tangled with secrets.

Shirin’s parents respond by hiring a famously skilled lawyer, Merila Zare’i, who visits Shirin in detention and manages to draw out her first words since the arrest. The lawyer takes this as a cautious opening and learns from Shirin’s mother Maede Tahmasbi that unlike her two earlier marriage attempts, Shirin chose the last one herself and that, in their eyes, she and her chosen partner are true lovers. The lawyer then meets the fiancé, who finally agrees to help. He visits Shirin and asks her for her motive, a question that begins to peel back layers of a life shaped by fear, loyalty, and love. As Shirin starts to tell her story, the narrative moves back to her childhood: when her parents were frequently away, they left her in the care of an assistant named Morad Babak Hamidian. Morad frequently abused her and took photographs of them during those lonely moments, a truth that the police will later uncover. The system arrests Morad, who initially denies the accusations, but when photographs of other girls surface in his home, he is subjected to interrogation that leads to a confession of dozens of sexual abuses. The confession seals Morad’s fate, and he is sentenced to death.

The courtroom then returns to the present as Shirin is asked to explain why she killed the janitor. She reveals that, as she was preparing to join her fiancé, she happened to witness the janitor abusing a neighbor’s daughter. In a moment of decisive courage, she frees the girl and takes action against the abuser. The detective and the lawyer try to debrief the abused girl and her parents, but they refuse to testify, explaining that revealing the daughter’s abuse could wreck the family’s reputation and usher in a social scandal that Iranian culture does not easily tolerate. The defense team seeks another path, bringing in a psychologist who argues that traumatic events in childhood can influence a person’s mental state and behavior. The court, however, does not accept this explanation and sentences Shirin to qisas.

Because Islamic law allows the death sentence to be replaced by diyya if a victim’s family member exists, the lawyer and the fiancé search for the janitor’s kin. They discover that a living brother exists, and the fiancé encounters a carpet salesman who knows the brother’s whereabouts. The salesman initially refuses to talk, but the fiancé’s threats to burn carpets eventually compel him to reveal the location. The would-be rescue mission heads to the brother, only to find him dying of a drug overdose. They rush him to a hospital, but he dies, and with that loss the path to diyya closes. As a consequence, Shirin is transferred for execution, bringing the legal ordeal to a heartrending oratorical close while leaving the rest of the lives touched by the case in a state of uneasy suspense.
