Deepa Nandy, Priyanka Upendra, lives in Taramati with her sister and brother-in-law Premendra, and she grows tired of feeling like a burden to her family. With a quiet resolve, she travels to Kolkata in hopes of finding steady work, staying with her friend Aruna as she faces a string of interviews that lead to little more than hopeful disappointment. After several failed opportunities, she decides to return home, carrying with her the weight of unfulfilled plans. On the return journey, a pickpocket steals her bag, which holds all of her certificates, leaving Deepa stranded and anxious about the future. The bag is later dumped onto the train, but the kind co-passengers rally to cover her fare and help her make it back to her sister’s home. Her brother-in-law’s biting sarcasm upon her arrival underscores her sense of setbacks and the social pressure she endures.

Ajit Choudhury, Ferdous Ahmed, boards the same life-spanning train bound for Jaisalmer, and fate nudges him into the moment when he discovers Deepa’s recovered bag. Through a series of conversations with a fellow traveler, we learn that Ajit is an orphan with a peculiar hobby: he collects people’s names and birthdays and sends out birthday cards. His journey takes him to Jaisalmer, where he crosses paths with Haradhan Kundu Singh and meets Rupmati, June Maliah, who lives next door. Kundu Singh, a knowledgeable and kindly figure, helps Ajit settle in, arranging a room and smoothing his path in a town that echoes with old Dhaka roots and new possibilities. The bond between Ajit and Deepa begins to form through a careful exchange of trust and correspondence. Ajit thoughtfully sends Deepa’s bag back to her, and she responds with a heartfelt note of thanks. Their ongoing exchange grows into a tender connection, and soon they begin to fall in love, carried by the rhythm of letters and moments shared from afar.

Rupmati, June Maliah, is drawn to Ajit as well and tries to win his affection by learning Bengali phrases and learning the language of his world. But when her friend and confidant Kundu Singh reveals that Ajit has been corresponding with Deepa, Rupmati’s feelings turn to fury and she confronts Ajit, a confrontation that adds tension and complexity to the blossoming web of relationships around them. Meanwhile, Deepa and Ajit continue to reach across distance and time: Ajit calls Deepa every Sunday, and Deepa responds with a small, tangible token—a T-shirt that she sends so he can recognize her when they meet. Deepa lands another interview in Kolkata, and her brother-in-law once again tries to orchestrate a future for her—arranging money for her to return to Kolkata and even proposing a marriage alliance that would secure a more stable life, while he quietly hopes she might land a solid job and a suitable partner.

Back in Jaisalmer, the company MD asks Ajit to assume new responsibilities to manage rising union troubles. The pressure from union leaders is real, and Ajit weighs his options carefully, even considering quitting. Ultimately, the company offers him a transfer back to Kolkata, a decision that leaves Rupmati seeking forgiveness and Ajit hoping for a path that doesn’t betray the many loyalties entwined around him.

The two landscapes—one in Kolkata and one in Jaisalmer—begin to converge when Ajit unexpectedly bumps into Deepa at a train station, though neither recognizes the other immediately. Deepa’s feelings toward Ajit are complex; she harbors a certain wariness and tries to avoid him, even as fate continues to nudge them toward a future they can’t ignore. The air thickens with new currents when Preeti, Sreelekha Mitra, the daughter of the MD who runs Ajit’s former company, enters the picture. Preeti flirts with Ajit, who politely resists her overtures and signals a different, more meaningful path. Preeti eventually secures a Singapore job, but she doesn’t want to leave Kolkata, highlighting the tangled webs of ambition, desire, and proximity that color every relationship in the story.

Deepa’s life in Taramati remains a touchstone for her, even as she edges toward a new chapter in Kolkata. A letter from Deepa to Ajit lands in Preeti’s hands, introducing a complication that heightens the mystery of who knows whom and who truly belongs with whom. Ajit’s job search stagnates, and his only steady work becomes driving a taxi as he navigates the city’s pulse. Meanwhile, Deepa’s brother-in-law continues to pressure the idea of marriage as a practical route to security, while Deepa wrestles with her own sense of timing and destiny. She plans to return to Kolkata to search for Ajit, determined to explain the distance that time and circumstance have placed between them.

Aruna, Deepa’s friend, remains off-screen for stretches but returns as a quiet beacon of possibility when Deepa finally sends a call for help. Deepa musters the courage to pursue Ajit by visiting his former colleague and former roommate, Prabodh, Shahin Alam who had once proposed to Deepa. Prabodh reassures Deepa that he will do what he can to locate Ajit and guide her toward him. In a rain-soaked moment that feels almost cinematic in its symbolism, Deepa is drenched yet undaunted as she enters Ajit’s life through his taxi and the home of a friend of his. Ajit, unaware of Deepa’s true identity in that moment, offers her the sari he bought for her and, in a warm gesture, wears the T-shirt she sent him earlier, while the shawl she uses to cover him becomes a quiet emblem of their intertwined fate.

As the drama unfolds, Deepa returns to Aruna’s house, but Aruna—a person who holds a piece of the story—receives Deepa’s letter and decides to hurry to the station to meet her friend. In a climactic turn, the two lovers finally come face to face: when the train pulls away, Ajit sheds his shawl, and Deepa recognizes the T-shirt that symbolically ties their hearts together. In that moment, as the aging city lights blur through the window and the final credits begin to roll, they run into each other’s arms, signaling that their journey—though crowded with misdirection, distance, and duty—has found its hopeful culmination.
