PC Nicholas Angel, portrayed by Simon Pegg, is a highly accomplished officer with the London Metropolitan Police Service, boasting an impressive record of 9 commendations in just 12 months and holding the title for the highest number of arrests within the force. His career takes an unexpected turn when a conspiratorial arrangement by his colleagues leads to his reassignment as a Sergeant to the sleepy, rural village of Sandford, Gloucestershire, a place proudly decorated as “Village of the Year.” This change doesn’t sit well with his ex-girlfriend Janine, who comments on his overwhelming dedication to the job, suggesting he could benefit from caring more about people.

Upon his arrival in Sandford, trouble brews almost immediately. The local pub, owned by Mary Porter and Roy Porter, finds itself at odds with Angel when he enforces the law against underage drinking, prompting heated discussions over the responsibility of keeping local youths away from trouble. His first night on duty sees him arresting five individuals for various petty crimes, including drunken driving and vandalism. However, he soon learns that one of these offenders is none other than his fellow officer, Danny Butterman, played by Nick Frost, whose easygoing nature and admiration for buddy cop movies offer a stark contrast to Angel’s serious demeanor.

As Angel navigates the village’s tedious pace, he grows increasingly frustrated with his seemingly lackluster and incompetent colleagues. Despite his promise of a cottage for accommodation, he finds himself residing in a local hotel owned by Joyce Cooper. The Sandford police force is filled with quirky characters, including Detective Sergeant Andy Wainwright and estate officer PC Doris Thatcher, but none seem to match Angel’s intensity.

Life takes a darker turn when a series of bizarre and shocking murders occur in the idyllic village, beginning with actors Martin Blower and Eve Draper, who were fatally attacked under the guise of a car accident. Angel’s intuition is piqued when he uncovers the truth behind these incidents, which seem to connect to local business deals involving a sinister supermarket manager, Simon Skinner, portrayed by Timothy Dalton.

As the plot thickens and more lives are lost—each death eerily dismissible as mere accidents—Angel’s commitment to uncovering the truth intensifies. Alongside Danny, he battles the growing suspicion that a clandestine local alliance may be behind the murders, driven by a twisted sense of preserving the village’s reputation. This culminates in a dramatic confrontation where Angel must not only face his adversaries but also confront the very essence of his commitment to law and order.

One year later, Angel has risen to the rank of Inspector, overseeing the Sandford police force with Danny by his side as Sergeant. The duo embarks on a new chapter, forever changed by their escapades and united in their resolve to protect their village—an adventure that promises to continue as they drive off to their next crime scene.
