Horizon Line (2021) Timeline Explained – Every Event in Order

Freddy suffers a sudden heart attack while piloting the plane, causing him to lose consciousness and sending the aircraft into a downward spiral. This is a medical emergency that occurs without warning, leaving Sara and Jackson to quickly take control of the plane. The heart attack is not caused by any external factor, it is a sudden health crisis that leaves them stranded in a life-threatening situation.

Sara and Jackson quickly work together to regain control of the spiraling aircraft. Sara moves to the co-pilot seat while Jackson helps stabilize the plane. They manage to level out the plane and keep it flying, though they have no formal pilot training. Their quick thinking and teamwork allow them to maintain control until they can assess their situation and seek help through the radio.

Foreshadowing: Freddy's invitation for Sara to sit in the co-pilot seat earlier in the flight proves crucial when she must take control.

They survive the storm with guidance from Samuel, an air traffic controller who talks them through the turbulence via shortwave radio. Samuel provides critical instructions on how to navigate through the storm, helping them maintain altitude and avoid crashing. The storm causes damage, including destroying their compass, but they make it through by following Samuel's guidance and working together as a team.

They must lighten the aircraft to conserve fuel and extend their flight range. With fuel running critically low and the plane too heavy to reach land, they make the heartbreaking decision to remove Freddy's lifeless body along with other unnecessary weight. This desperate measure is taken to give themselves any chance of surviving and reaching land before running out of fuel entirely.

Sara discovers rum bottles in the plane and realizes the high-alcohol content rum could serve as a potential fuel source when mixed with the remaining fuel. She ventures out onto the wing in the storm and pours Solomon's potent rum into the engine, creating a makeshift fuel solution. This improvised attempt gives the engine a brief boost, though it ultimately proves insufficient to keep the plane flying indefinitely.

Foreshadowing: Sara's earlier ingenuity in spotting useful items foreshadows her resourcefulness in the crisis.

With no fuel left and the plane gliding toward a small island, Sara and Jackson prepare for a crash landing. They aim for the water near the island shore, and the plane descends violently into the sea, shattering on impact. Sara uses all her strength to free Jackson, who is trapped on the submerged wing, and they both struggle to shore. Their survival comes down to the crash occurring in water rather than on land, which absorbs some of the impact.

Facing imminent death on the sinking sandbar with the tide rising, Jackson confesses his love for Sara because he believes they are about to die. The near-death experience forces him to be vulnerable and express his true feelings before it's too late. Their reconciliation and survival instinct throughout the crisis have rekindled their relationship, and the confession represents their emotional reunion after years of being apart.

Foreshadowing: Their forced cooperation throughout the crisis, from flying the plane to surviving the crash, gradually rebuilds their connection.

A fishing vessel responds to their desperate radio calls and arrives to rescue them just as they face death on the disappearing sandbar. The boat's appearance provides hope and salvation after their harrowing ordeal. Their persistent attempts to communicate over the radio finally pay off when the fishing vessel picks up their distress signal and comes to their aid.

Foreshadowing: Their earlier attempts to contact Samuel via radio establish that communication is their only hope for rescue.

Jackson climbs out onto the wing to repair a damaged fuel line that is leaking precious fuel. The fuel line was broken during the turbulence, and with fuel running critically low, fixing it becomes essential for their survival. Despite the dangerous conditions, Jackson attempts the repair but suffers a grievous injury, a badly broken arm, when he falls during the attempt.

They need Samuel's guidance because they lose their compass during the storm and have no way to determine their direction. Samuel, as a local air traffic controller, knows the region and provides them with navigation instructions through shortwave radio. Without his help, they would have no way to find their way to land or understand which direction to fly.
