Set at the end of the Thirty Years’ War, Hynek Bočan’s drama examines the Czech nation’s wavering resolve under foreign rule and the misery that aristocrats endure. Rudolf Hrušínský plays a knight urged in vain to join the anti‑Habsburg resistance, as the mud‑laden farmstead depicted secures its place beside classics such as Kladivo na čarodějnice.
