May and Ray move into a Hong Kong apartment with their son Chi-lo and catch sight of a hideous creature during the move. They tell Ray about the sighting, but he urges them to move out. The family decides to stay because of the money already invested in the place.

Chi-lo attends a neighbor's birthday party within the complex and is abducted by the creature, who mistakes him for her own son. May and Ray report the disappearance to the police and begin a desperate search of the building. Tension rises as the community grapples with the threat.

In the parking garage, the kidnapper wounds Ray with a makeshift knife, leaving him critically injured. He is rushed to the hospital as May and others scramble to respond. The danger becomes intensely personal for May.

With neighbours unwilling to help, May continues the search on her own. She navigates the building's air ducts, nearly being attacked by the woman, and then falls through a vent to the outside, knocking herself unconscious. The pursuit grows increasingly perilous.

A second search uses a dog to track the killer to the rooftop. The dog scares Chi-lo and is killed by the woman, who bites off one of her fingers; May later retrieves the severed finger from the dog's mouth. The clue deepens the mystery and danger.

May brings the severed finger to a police detective, and fingerprint testing identifies the killer as Chan Yim-hung. Chan had lived with her husband and son in the same poor area years ago, where a riot and an explosion occurred during government reclamation efforts. The losses drove Chan into insanity.

To draw Chan out, May prints and scatters copies of Chan's photos through the complex's air ducts. The tactic succeeds in drawing Chan's attention to May and the missing child. The plan heightens the tension as the confrontation nears.

Chan confronts May in her apartment and demands the return of her son. May insists that Chi-lo is not Chan's son, but Chan forcibly takes him and drives away. May resolves to pursue them, escalating the danger to both.

Back in the complex's utility systems, Chan envisions her deceased husband and is urged to let go of their 'home'. A reflection in the electrical grid triggers her to smash the glass, causing a blackout that shrouds the entire complex in darkness. May senses the window of opportunity closing as chaos erupts.

May notices a cloth belonging to Chi-lo floating down from the sky, confirming they are on the rooftop. She fights through the blackout to reach the rooftop where Chan has taken Chi-lo. The rooftop becomes the stage for the final desperate crossing.

May confronts Chan and stops her from harming Chi-lo. Chan plunges to her death, and May and Chi-lo embrace, seeking safety after the harrowing rescue. The immediate danger ends, but the emotional trauma lingers with them.

As the screen fades, Chi-lo asks if May would abandon him. May replies that she would never abandon her child, reinforcing their bond after all they've endured. The ending emphasizes the mother's commitment and the resilience of their family.
